Åmund Posted August 5, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) My old Mac has gone to the final server in the sky and I'm in the process of buying a new one, a Mac Book Pro. This will be a new device for me so I wondered if you would advice me on which screen size is best? 15" or 17"? Any other recommendations on features I should include? Advertisement Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Hi Åmund, Take a look here 15" or 17". I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted August 5, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2009 I find 17"on the small side. So definitely not 15". I'm sniffing at Mac too
wattsy Posted August 5, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 5, 2009 I've the current generation 17" anti-glare and it's fine. Calibrates nicely and is nice and bright. However, do bear in mind that all Apple laptop screens are 6-bit and, as such, decidedly so-so for photographic work.
Colemanbear Posted August 5, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 5, 2009 Or... I just got the 15" but with the 24" LED screen. More money yes:-0 but it works very well with Lightroom in dual screen mode. I use the laptop screen for grids and selections and full screen preview on the 24" for corrections. The built in charger helps cut down on clutter too. I had a 17" MBP before but prefer the 15" for traveling as it's a lot less bulky. Personally I'd have preferred a matte version but it's still a very good monitor. pgk Posted August 5, 2009 Share #5 Posted August 5, 2009 I'm using a 13" and its brilliant for travel. In my office I couple it up to an Apple 20" LCD. Best of both worlds.
Sandokan Posted August 5, 2009 Share #6 Posted August 5, 2009 Do you really need a laptop? If not try the iMac. Otherwise the 17" which gives 1920x1200 (the 15" gives 1440 by 900) Mac screens are good and offer full colour (24bit) and have fast processors. wattsy Posted August 5, 2009 Share #7 Posted August 5, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mac screens are good and offer full colour (24bit) and have fast processors. No, you're wrong. The screens are okay but are 6-bit screens that use a dithering algorithm to create the impression of 8-bits of information. The only true 8-bit screens in the entire current line-up are the separate displays and the one in the high-end iMac. All the laptops use 6-bit displays - including the 17" MBP model. Rinse Posted August 5, 2009 Share #8 Posted August 5, 2009 If you want to spend the money, my advise would be to go for the 15" laptop or even 13" for ease of traveling and then have a larger 24" screen at home. If you don't want to spend the money, the 17" would be a good compromise, but it is rather large for traveling and rather small for viewing and working. adli Posted August 5, 2009 Share #10 Posted August 5, 2009 I have a 15" Macbook Pro. In my opinion the screen is not good enough for picture editing, the colors are not accurate enough and the vary with the viewing angle I would go for a small laptop and an external screen. Then you can do basic editing in the field and use the larger screen for the more nity-gritty editing back at home. I use a Eizo ColorEdge wich is a screen I can recomend for picture editing. Make sure to calibrate it.
mattwardle Posted August 7, 2009 Share #11 Posted August 7, 2009 Ive got both the 17" MBP (2 years old) and a new 15" MBP. To be honest if your traveling around the 15" wins hands down all the time. The 17 " is just to heavy to be classed as truly portable machine. I love the 15, however I think next purchase is the LED screen as just sometimes it can be a wee bit small. jacksparrow Posted August 7, 2009 Share #14 Posted August 7, 2009 17" is too big if you are going to move it around regularly, but OK if its only to take it every now and then. I also thought bigger screen would be best, but at the end I settled for the 15" and I'm happy with it. If you think you can live without portability, then the iMac is probably a better deal for the same money, but you are stuck with it on top of your desk. As some others have said, whatever you choose, get as much RAM as possible. I haven't tried it with the PowerBook, but I bought a generic RAM and installed it in my old iBook without problems, and about 4 times cheaper than the Apple RAM. wattsy Posted August 7, 2009 Share #15 Posted August 7, 2009 17" is too big if you are going to move it around regularly, but OK if its only to take it every now and then. I can't say I agree. I have both a current 17" MBP and a MacBook Air and don't notice a huge difference taking one or the other when shuttling by tube and foot between home and the office I use about three days a week. The difference between the 17" and 15" models would be even less marked.
topoxforddoc Posted August 7, 2009 Share #16 Posted August 7, 2009 13 inch MBP for portability and a desktop for serious work. You won't want to carry a 17 inch MBP around. If money was less important, I'd get a Macbook Air and a desktop. When you're lugging kit around, weight and portability become a real issue as to whether you want to carry it or not. R10dreamer Posted August 7, 2009 Share #17 Posted August 7, 2009 I would never edit on a notebook. Therefore, I got the 15" screen and love the MacPro 15" have.
budaapple Posted August 7, 2009 Share #18 Posted August 7, 2009 although the 17" does give you the extra real estate it is a big portable. I would suggest getting the 15 and buying apple care and a refurb external monitor Much better bang for the buck Good luck

ewelch Posted August 8, 2009 Share #20 Posted August 8, 2009 My old Mac has gone to the final server in the sky and I'm in the process of buying a new one, a Mac Book Pro. This will be a new device for me so I wondered if you would advice me on which screen size is best? 15" or 17"? Any other recommendations on features I should include? Åmund I've been traveling with the MacBook Pro 17" since January 2007. I've taken it to India, Africa and Brazil. It's great! I have a backpack with a side zipper I can slip the laptop into. Carry all my cameras and the lappy in that. At the end of a long day of shooting, with about 16 gigs worth of photos to sort through, the 17" screen is easy on the eyes. Don't worry about color. The new MBPs have great screens with a 60 percent larger color gamut than before. Fine tune at home, but when you're on the road, the screens are just fine for what you need. (Send photos home to an editor, or just travelogue photos for friends and family (or the boss). The Wifi is great on these babies, easy to set up and fast. The hotels in India I stayed in had really fast Wifi. (Taj). Zanzibar was really, really, really slow dialup on the far side of the island from Stone Town. Didn't matter, the big screen is great. But heft one and see if it weighs too much. Quite a silly comparison to all laptops from 10 years ago. These are featherweights in comparison. But if I were to get me a personal laptop, I'd get the 13" MacBook pro for travel. With Leicas the SD card slot built in would be handy.
