jrc Posted July 30, 2009 Share #26 Posted July 30, 2009 Scene 1 Take 1 the studio We see the interior of a professional photographer's studio. A gorgeous red-headed model in the background is trying out poses in front of seamless blue paper. She is wearing a black push-up bra and jeans and red tennis shoes (because the photo will be from the waist up only.) There are three strobes pointed at her, with a big softbox on one and an umbrella on another. The strobes flicker as three three assistants, wearing white shirts and black jeans, run tests on the equipment, install snoots, move flags, etc. An art director in a suit, and a flunky, stand to left, looking at a large monitor on which we see the model. A makeup woman hurries round carrying a suitcase. Enter, from left, the photographer. He looks at the the model from several angles, framing her with his hands, then says absently to one of the assistants, without looking at him, "Hand me the S2, will you? Thank...oh shit!" andybarton Posted July 30, 2009 Share #27 Posted July 30, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) £14,000 (plus VAT presumably) That's quite a lot of money for a body What's the competition level? How realistic are the dates?
mooky Posted July 30, 2009 Share #28 Posted July 30, 2009 Okay, the body is WAY to pricey. The lenses are another matter, and I'm actually 'pleased' at the prices. In today's world, digital bodies haven't had the longevity of film cameras so I would expect the bodies to be cheap vs. the lenses. I'm an absolute believer in Leica and I want them to succeed, but the R10 actually seems like a better idea right now, and I actually like the S2 concept but having to pay extra for a Sapphire LCD cover glass is a bit much. Lenses yes, body, ???????
andybarton Posted July 30, 2009 Share #29 Posted July 30, 2009 The BJP reckon that the prices are lower than expected. Have they also lifted the embargo / NDA on images from the camera too?
JBA Posted July 30, 2009 Share #30 Posted July 30, 2009 I'm an absolute believer in Leica and I want them to succeed, but the R10 actually seems like a better idea right now . . . Wasn't it always?
BerndReini Posted July 30, 2009 Share #31 Posted July 30, 2009 This is going to flop! I spent a lot of money on an M8 and very expensive lenses and I was interested in the S2, but I'm telling you, this is going to be a huge flop and put Leica's future in danger. I am very concerned about my investment in a Leica system. Charging additional money for a premium customer service package and a stupid sapphire cover? Are you kidding me? At this price point? Huge disaster. Anybody agree?
Guest s.m.e.p. Posted July 30, 2009 Share #32 Posted July 30, 2009 I think these prices are in the tradition of LEICA. It was always a little bit more expensive to take pictures with LEICA!
zapp Posted July 30, 2009 Share #33 Posted July 30, 2009 This is going to flop! Disagree. The price is quite reasonable for what you get. Sensor and camera are well within the pricing range of a Phase One system based on Hasselblad cameras and similar cameras. The lenses must perform great - Leica lenses do that - to justify the price. No question that the camera will outperform most of the competition. The remaining questions are: How many people will actually buy the camera (even Phase One is not selling millions of backs); how many people can profit from the specs of this camera - better to say who needs it? A digital back can be used interchangeably on wide angle cameras, view cameras and a studio Hasselblad alike. The Leica competes on many fields and will not cover all of them. The price will not be the reason for a flop - quality has its price - but I can see other problems. My major question right now is: What is the shutter speed of the leaf shutter. We just got prices, still not all the specs.
harlock999 Posted July 30, 2009 Share #34 Posted July 30, 2009 I don't find the prices that bad. I still can't afford one, but they seem in-line with Hasselblad digital systems. I hope Leica sell tons of these.
stevelap Posted July 30, 2009 Share #35 Posted July 30, 2009 Here's the BJP announcement on UK pricing: British Journal of Photography - Leica unveils UK pricing of its S2 flagship camera Good to see that Leica are going to deliver on a professional level support service. London Leica Store opening confirmed too (see the Customer Forum): http://www.bjp-online.com/public/showPage.html?page=866676
tjv Posted July 30, 2009 Share #36 Posted July 30, 2009 Man, that is a totally crazy price, especially since you have to pay extra for "good" service (at best.) I wish them luck but at this price I seriously doubt they'll sell 500 units let alone the 10000 they hope for. Why bother building a new system from the ground up to compete with real medium format systems when the end price is a lot more than the competition? Totally crazy business strategy. andreas_thomsen Posted July 30, 2009 Share #38 Posted July 30, 2009 S2 is now the perfect collectors item. one of the rarest leica in the comming future i hope that leica will survive that experiment cheers andy
plasticman Posted July 30, 2009 Share #39 Posted July 30, 2009 Crikey now I'm really worried. I know most of the buyers of this sort of stuff are too busy working to hang in internet forums, but please - someone tell me that you're gonna buy (at least) one of these. Seriously - someone tell me this is a better deal than all the other options that are already in place. I know a lot of photographers through work, but I'm genuinely embarrassed to ask any of them if they'd think about this system - even the really talented ones that work internationally aren't exactly rolling in cash these days. D@mn I really do feel like I just saw the end of the M-system. Please tell me I'm wrong.
