There is no dirt on the lens, optics are perfect, no water damage and when I take a burned out pic it's not there. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Jon Welcome, dear visitor! ajthornbury Posted July 13, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 13, 2009 A lot depends on whether the black spot is there during subsequent pics. Looking closely at the spot it seems to have feathered edge around the spot, and so indicates that what ever it is is out of focus. Jon Looks to me just like a blob of dust on the sensor, coming into focus as you used f/11, while with wider apertures it would become almost invisible. Did you have your sensor replaced? Unfortunately they do not do it in a clean chamber and I saw this happening many times besides my case. Sorry to say, real sorry I mean, I had this problem on two of my D/2's when they came back from Solms in late 2007. It has been a real negative experience on my part as both did the trip to Solms many times (and I really do mean many...) to get it cleaned to no avail, until one day I gave up and accepted the exchange with a D/3. If you're a daring DIY one, so to say, maybe some fellow LUF users might help you and offer directions in disassembling the camera, guess a simple blower shot could do the trick a that point. The spot does seem to go in and out of focus when the camera is trying to find its focus. How much does leica charge to clean the sensor? Thanks for the info on how to do it but experience tells me not to try this at home! As for a UFO, sadly as it is on all the subsequent pics I guess its not one - otherwise might be on the phone to the papers and ordering my M8 with a set of lenses from the bounty, might even have bought a leica Tshirt for my chat show appearances !!!! The spot does seem to go in and out of focus when the camera is trying to find its focus. Unfortunately, even though it's not an interchangeable lens camera, dust can (and does) get in. As difficult as it is for dust to find its way into the camera, it is even more difficult to find its way out. The static charge on the sensor is probably going to keep it lodged. Cleaning is not difficult, though I sense your a bit aprehensive about taking the camera apart. My cleaning on my Canon gear is pretty much a weekly deal. The last "closed" camera I had this happen to was my girlfriend's Lecia C1.. it really wasn't worth repairing. You'll suffer through the wait... but it's certainly going to be fine in the end. camboychan Posted December 21, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted December 21, 2009 Hi folks I sent my beloved little Digilux 2 back to Leica, waited 4 weeks and picked it up, paid my £95 and headed home. All seemed well until I actually used it on a nice sunny day this weekend and the spot is still there with the addition of another 2 spots... Beware of Leica service ! The pics are lovely, the colours great but this baby has spent too much time away with the sensor replacement, cleaning and now back again for 6 weeks - unacceptable and a sad reflection on the red dot. adan Posted December 21, 2009 Share #15 Posted December 21, 2009 Simple test - try shooting at "28mm" and "90mm" - if the black spot changes position within the frame, then it is not on the sensor, but on or in the glass (and, yes, with real focal lengths of 7mm-21mm, the Digilux 2 will actually capture stuff on the front element at the wide end or at smaller apertures - I know, I shot kayakers in white water - and water drops on the front element showed up clearly). If the black spot stays in the same place in the image at any focal length, then it is on the sensor or the rear element of the lens (which is a flat plate just in front of the sensor). It's funny because there was only one before and now there are three. This would suggest that more dust got in after Leica opened it up as well as not cleaning the original problem.
