Hey guys,, just got my 50mm Lux,,and just wondering what would be the best film to use for portrait and day to day snap shots in both COLOR & B/W (especially the b/w) ,,,,I have been "DIGITIZED" for a while, but the film are just so much better,,, but need to get some good opinion on the films ( both slides and neg. please) thank you guys for the recommendation ! .

LONG LIVE LEICA !

YOU EITHER LOVE IT BECAUSE YOU KNOW M's are the BEST CAMERA around.

OR YOU DIE KNOCKING IT BECAUSE YOU NEVER OWNED ONE.

...welcome to the forum, turbojk. There is no such thing as a "best" film - each photographer has his/her own preference, so it really does depend on what you are looking for in your final print. There are several threads within the film forum that highlight the characteristics of certain films. Your research will be a lot more efficient if you use the search facility.

Here's my recommendation - try different types of film, and when you are happy with a particular result, stick with it. Unless you want to experiment further. Enjoy. :)

The answer is simple...............the best film/s the one you like most.

As above, go out and buy a roll each of as many different films as you can find where you are and shoot them all, then shoot more, then some more. Eventually you'll find what YOU like best, and it almost certainly won't be restricted to a couple - I use different films for their individual qualities, just as you would use some photoshop action or other :D

Oh, and do get a roll of Kodachrome and join in the Kodachrome challenge!

Here is my answer; simple as it gets. Any film will do, frankly it doesn't matter. What I found out to be of great importance is to stick to one film once you decided. Never change unless you are forced to. Concentrate on photography rather than on gear and film.

perhaps - if you don't know any film product -

you can try:

colour film: Fuji REALA 100 or Kodak Ektar 100

colour silde film: Fuji VELVIA 50 or 100

black&white film: Fuji ACROS 100 or Fuji NEOPAN 400 or Kodak TRI x400

.......concentrate on photography - rather than on gear and film.......

enjoy :)

It says California and Summilux so I would be starting with C41 consumer 100 fuji and Kodak and experimenting out from there.

If you arent scanning your own more likely what you see in files or print will be largely dependent on who you have doing your scans.

Hi

Roger Hicks gives some opinions here, and Fuji give a good description of their range on a pdf available for download. As others have said it is very personal (I like Ilford HP5+ for its versitility and look and Fuji NPH (colour negative) for the natural colour).

You will find however that there will be a huge difference in the end results with any film depending on the quality (and method) of processing - the best 'professional' film can still look horrible in old chemicals or after poor handling from a mini-lab that only runs one film a week through its machines.

Picking a good lab is more important than the film you choose.

Or better still process B&W yourself.

Hope this is helpful - Dan

I use an M6 with a 35 mm F2 Summicron, and have been delighted with the results from Kodak T Max 400, Ilford FP4, and Ilford Pan F 50 in Black and White.

For colour some Kodak Portra NC 160, and Fuji Velvia 100. hope this helps. Happy Leica hunting ! Metalman

Once you have chosen the film developer combination you like, learn to develop it yourself, as that is the only way you will get the consistent results that you like. For what it matters, I love rodinal and pan f+ 50 or TriX.

Part of the fun is selecting.

welcome back to film! I did the same...

probably you should use low iso films to benefits from wide apertures..

anyway you should try and try.. But there is the great thing: you can change the "sensor" every 36 shots.. :)

With my M6+35 summicron ASPH and Elmar 90mm F4 I use:

- B&W: Ilford Xp2

- Color: Portra 160NC

Welcome back to the real world Turbojk.

I have to agree to what other members have stated, I love using the modern slide Films in the likes of

Kodak 100G,GX,and VS and Fuji films as I want to support them equally.

As I have stated many times on this Leica Forum, if you want to see those brilliant Leica images

Shoot Transparancies or slide films and leave all other cams for pretty picture post cards.

Now two points you made stated!

LONG LIVE LEICA ! ....... NO IT'S LONG LIVE LEICA FILM CAMERAS.

And

YOU EITHER LOVE IT BECAUSE YOU KNOW M's are the BEST CAMERA around.

OR YOU DIE KNOCKING IT BECAUSE YOU NEVER OWNED ONE.

I also own the M7 simply a great camera and probably the best M ever made,

But I am afraid to inform you that Leica Reflex's such as the SL/SL2-- R 6/7 and R 8/9 out class the M line.

Once again Congratulations on your choice.

Ken.
