I've posted this on the forum before, but our policy as a "good" dealer is to provide two filters to our customers when they purchase an M8. Then, when they receive the free filters from Leica some weeks later, they send them to us and everyone is happy. This procedure has always seemed to be pretty obvious and the right thing to do, at least to me.

This is great, but wouldn't it be even easier if the M8 buyer could pick up his two filters right from the dealer and that's it?

I just hate the Safari, White, Gucci, Special Edition thing on an otherwise very good camera. I feel like it cheapens it by emphasizing the jewelry, look-at-me, show your wealth aspect of an otherwise very capable camera, in the right hands.

I doubt that that is the case. I always wonder at the ascribing of wannabe aspects to Leica products, just because they happen to be expensive and because Leica traditionally produces special editions.

Joe Public certainly wouldn't know what a Leica M camera is even if they were smacked over the head with it, even less a Noctilux.

If one wants to impress, some heavy gold neck chains,a Chevrolet Corvette,a diamond-studded Rolex and a peroxide trophy wife are surely far more effective for the professional poser.

Pretty interesting... I wonder how it will look for the wedding that I'll be shooting in the snow in Norway in February... :D

Thanks for posting the images, David... I'll love to see one firsthand once I get back from Mexico next week.

Cheers,

Riccis,

here is the ultimative fourwheeler for your task in Norway - in white.....

Or if you get two filters from your dealer, why dont you just let Leica know and they send replacements to the dealer. Then you no longer have to be involved.

Jaap - half of Hollywood is shaking an M8 at paparazzi these days. I think you underestimate the appeal of these bling-bling items.

I'm frankly embarrassed by them, and for all the talk about the money they bring in, and the 'live-and-let-live' attitude that I would like to assume in this case, I can't help feeling that these bijou editions do nothing but harm to the brand image as a whole, and reduce the credibility of the camera in the eyes of many who already suspect that Leica is only for the rich and superficial.

I'm not sure. I don't think a Mercedes 500S is a lesser car just because some oil sheik ownes a number of them with golden door handles and a crystal bath tub in the boot.

That's what I meant. And why would Leica have to send your two filters to the dealer separately - they supply them anyway.

Sorry to stray off topic - I like the white M8 - just the looks, not from a status symbol point of view. As Jaap rightly says, it would not work for that anyway.

Not a lesser car, Jaap, but it's hard to think of a better way of showing the world that these cars are an obscene waste of resources.

But back to Leica: Hardly anyone I know personally understands why I use a Leica - mostly they think it's for showing off the red dot, although they should know me better. Since they have never used a Leica lens they just don't understand the difference. Safari and white editions for especially ridiculous prices don't make explaining much easier.

So what is the one and only color you want to see for all cars? This sounds quite boring to me!

The world is colorful and I am happy it is!

Hi Steve - this ignores the (sad?) fact that Leica is not just a camera, it is a brand. And in order to sell products the brand must be seen to embody certain core values which a (hopefully) relatively healthy number of people believe reflects their own values, or at least their aspirational values.

In this respect, many of us are glad when we see our camera being used by an artist or possibly photojournalist who's work we admire. We also hope this will inspire and encourage others to begin seeing the M8 as something more than rich man's jewelry.

The all-white bling edition waved around by Paris Hilton doesn't reflect my idea of the Leica brand.

Sure - but like the S class merc, Leica should be allowed to appeal to different types of people.

If selling white cameras to Paris Hilton . . . or anyone else you care to mention . . . adds a few bob to Leica's coffers for R&D, isn't that a good thing?

I KNOW why I use Leicas, and the fact that other people use them for another reason doesn't affect me one jot.

Added to which - I think these things are FUN - and there's little enough fun around.

it's usually people that can't afford it will trash it. some of my friends can't understand why i spend $7K for the M8 + lens while for them a $700 Nikon DSLR will work for them. most will call these special editions gimmicy, cheapens the brand, etc... but they are interesting, whether they looking nice or butt ugly. so now that there are these special editions out there, do you think it cheapens your M8/ DLux 4? leica has always had a history of special editions because ultra rich people LOVE to be different. a very wealthy friend of mine bought a silver exotic car, then realized that a white version was more rare so he bought a white one too.

btw i like the white M8... they should've made the USB cover and rear wheel dial white as well.

I don't see anything so special about painting a camera white. It may be a way to move some of the old M8s. It would truly be a "special edition" if it had a full frame 20+ megapixel sensor, IS, and various other updates and fixes.

As for white plastic turning yellow... some years ago a friend of mine bought a brand new white Corvette. After about a year he parked it next to a new one and noticed that his car looked slightly yellow in comparison. After getting no satisfaction from his dealer, he called the wife of the CEO of General Motors at her home and explained his displeasure with the car. A few days later two people from GM showed up and bought his car for what he paid for it.

I do not see the core values of the Leica brand effected by any color of the special editions. In my point of view it is just another option some might like to go for. It does not touch my photography at all. If it encourages some stinky rich to buy a Leica I hope they will be enlightened by its core values. If not it does not hurt but helps too keep Leica affordable.

Regards

Steve

I agree. A white camera doesn't float my boat but if it helps Leica . . . :D

Two cents. Think the white looks cool--with the exception of the black buttons.

The white-on-chrome numbering looks *very* cool, if a small sacrifice of function for fashion.

Dave--thanks for taking the photos of the unboxing and posting them.

And, yeah, did anyone on the Forum BUY one of these? I'd love to hear first-hand how it feels/looks in person, how it is to use in public, etc.

Cheers,

Will

A friend was in middle management for Chrysler Corp. One day, while in his boss' office he glanced out the window to the parking spot reserved for his boss. In that spot was a particularly hideous car with a paint color that only a mother could love. The exterior color was made even worse by a custom interior with an equally dreadful color scheme.

My friend and all management were issued 'company cars' to use for some months after which they would be sold at reduced prices. So, the boss' car was, indeed, a company car that would be offered for sale to the public later on.

My friend's question to his boss was, "who in the world is going to buy that car after you're finished with it?" The boss looked over and said, "Bill, there's an a$$ for every seat"!

Man, if I were female, I'd tuck that white M8 into my Gucci bag and be off and running :) .
