Thinking about the shutter upgrade!

I'm thinking about to get the new shutter. Do you know how long leica service needs for this upgrade? Just the shutter upgrade is about 1200 EU plus transport. I've tried a couple of times the new one and I feel a big difference. Would you do the whole upgrade for 2000 EU. I'm a bit scared of letting my M8 fly away. It would be the first time:(. Should I wait till the new M9 and spare the money for that?

Thanks

The whole upgrade makes no sense to me as a used M8 is worth about €2000-€2400. Resell yours and add €2000 and you get a new M8.2.

As for the shutter upgrade, the lower shutter noise of the M8.2 does make a difference as far as I could hear, but I don't want to lose the 1/8000th speed. So in my case, I'll wait for a M9 and not upgrade anything.

.............Should I wait till the new M9 and spare the money for that?.............

I hated the vibration of the old shutter as well as the dodgy frame lines (for my 75mm), so I had the full monty last year for 1200 EUR. I do miss the 1/8000 though.

It all depends on your needs. The whole upgrade at 2000 EUR seems steep now, but it could be a long wait for a M9.

Yanidels resell advice makes sense, and you get two years of warranty for a M8.2 instead of 1 year for an upgraded M8.

We don't know anything yet, but my guess is that the M9 will have the 4000 shutter.

that would be a bummer. yet, if no UV/IR filters are needed on the M9 as I have read in a post (I believe you mentioned it ?), mounting a ND filter will be less of a deal I guess ?

Also if you go for the M8.2 you get 2 more filters and the new charger.

As I hear they are still tinkering with the IR filtering.

Waiting and wondering a few more years won't do any harm, I suppose. Although I'm not utterly convinced that the eternal upgrade program will really turn out ot be that eternal.

But when you look at what happened to the R10 (the one that was supposed to be the technological offspring of the S2) I wouldn't hold my breath for the M9, if I were you. Particularly, since no one knows what it will be or look like - even if it does come out in the end.

Now really, I do wonder where all those sarcastic smileys come from?! (Can't include another one, because the software allows only four.)

which leeds me to the question: Is the M8 shutter speed is full frame equivalent or measured accross the smaller senser? (so that 8000 becomes actual 10640)

I would also think that Leica will have set the timing to suit the sensor size. If they hadn't, I'm sure that someone would have measured it, and there would be a thread in this forum complaining by now.

Miguel, save the $ on the camera and buy that extra lens you keep debating (still 35 cron?). I think your money is better spent on the lens than a shutter. Your pics don't seem to suffer from any shutter issues.

Miguelito,

Seems silly to me. The upgrades are way too expensive at this point. I work in sensitive situations and love quiet shutters, but the M8 as is works fine for me. It's really not that loud and I can handhold it pretty slow.

Financially, it would make more sense to trade the M8 for an M8.2 or better yet just save the money for a lens (which would actually give you added capabilities) or for a future M9.

My sentiments exactly. From what I understand, the 'feel' of the new shutter differs from body to body. I've had the experience of trying a few different M8.2 together and, it could be psychological, but they don't feel 'exactly' the same. Of course my hands are no scientific gauge so take that with a whole bowl of salt! And whilst I do feel more tremors with my M8, it doesn't make enough seismic difference, IMHO, to impress.

I, for one, would not do the upgrade; in fact, I rather prefer the 1/8000 and probably not swap that if the upgrade was free. I'd put that 1200 to 2000 Euros in a piggy bank for a new 21 or 24 Lux *drool* :D

Probably a good guess . It is incongruous, imho, for a camera like the M8.2 to offer a "Snapshot" mode. I never use it; the "A" mode is just as fast and more flexible. The M9 should scrap the "S" and add the 1/8000 sec. shutter speed.

But wouldn't we then be back to the noisy shutter that everyone complained about?

Thank you for the interesting replies!

The upgrade seems to be no more profitable. I should have done it when it was cheaper. I like the speed 8000 but not as much as the smooth new shutter.

On the other hand my dear M8 is getting old and perhaps would be a nice present get this operation for her. I think I will never sell it. We have a kind of relationship.:D

Anyway, my idea is to buy the M9 and keep the M8 as a second body. That's the big question. How long? If it's less than two years, is better to wait. And more than two years, is better to improve my M8.

Regards

Miguel.

Hi Jeff!

How are you? The 35 is always in my mind, but I got a couple of nice shots with the 28mm that gave me some quietness;). Now, seriusly 35 cron, 21mm 1.4, 24mm 1.4, 18mm 3.5 are always in my mind. But I have to think too much.

Kind Regards

Miguel

Shutter issues!!!! I have!
