Hi,

I have been saving money for THE big day, the M8 reaching the market.

and  now, I have the money, I have my wife convinced and I am left with an M8 purshase stuck in a magenta limbo!!!!

what would you do?

1- buy an M8 anyway and cross fingers for a firmware / IR filter solution?

2- wait for the solution and they buy a fine tuned M8 ?

3- buy something else such as a Canon D5 ?

4- use the money to refit my home kitchen?

Thanks for your help and advice.

Eric

i was thinking about this also. i sold a bunch of stuff on ebay saving up for my M8. now my M8 purchase is definitely on hold until the problems are fixed. i _do_ think Leica will solve the problems, but this could eventually require hardware fixes in an updated camera, who knows?

and while the 5D is a smart choice, i just don't care for the dslr experience enough to invest that much cash in a body and a couple of primes.

so the choice for me.... i will probably buy a second used M7 and just continue to shoot slides. one body for kodachrome and one body for astia/provia/whatever. i can live without the digital convenience.

when the M8 is fixed i will consider supporting Leica with a purchase.

Reift the kitchen....here's why

1. A $6000 investment in a new kitchen should add at least $12000 to your property value.

2. Since you have wife in positive mood by the sound of things (well done by the way..I know how difficult this is!) suggest that after completeing the kitchen you move to Yosemite or Montana or somewhere nice and picturesque.

3. Sell up and retain $10000 for new camera kit. That will now allow a neat upgrade of lens at the same time as M8

4. Move then purchase your M8 & lens - by that time the magenta thing will have been resolved.

5. Start taking and selling shots of Yosemite and from the proceeds take your wife to Paris.

6. In turn you can practise the modern art of street photography from which more prints can be sold and in turn you can take your wife to Venice (Italy not the beach as you may lose her to a muscle bound type who dislikes being on the wrong side of the camera.... or maybe that isn't such a bad thing after all!)

As you can see this plan is a long term but self fulfilling prophecy of good photographic times to come.. We all need something to look forward to. Including magenta-less files from an M8. And for your wife a nice trip to Paris!

Voila!

The only problem with some of your logical suggestions is that Eric lives in Tenerife icon7.gif !

If I were Eric and had another camera, I'd just carry on using that whilst keeping the money in the bank earning interest and when these problems are resolved, buy an M8.

1- No, it is not very wise :(

2- YES, this is what I will do anyway. This way we will also have the opportunity to show our wives how wise and well informed consumers we are :D

3- No, when the fine tuned M8 will be available you will feel sad.

4- NO, absolutely NOT!

How about catching one of the refurb RD-1's when they pop up on the Epson site, and spend the rest on the kitchen. You'll get most of your $'s out of the used RD-1 next year, and the wife will be overjoyed.

There are some new and refurb models available at Robert White as I write this.

I hope this isn't against forum rules, please accept my apologies if it is.

Absolutley not! The time for crossing fingers or sticking your head in the sand hoping the problem will go away is over.

The sensor design in that camera is seriously flawed and its performance by present-day digital camera standards is, quite frankly, laughable.

Why on earth would you spend $6000 on a camera that produces images worse than a 10MP $500 point-and-shoot? Brand loyalty? Bragging rights? Just to say you have an M8? Be my guest...

Leica must stop shipping the M8 immediately and get started on developing a decent sensor that is capable of rendering first class images. The optics are there; they are the best in the world. The design is there - it's a great looking beast of a camera. But it's let down by a terrible sensor that loves to turn people wearning black into blueberries!

This is not the Leica glow people were after...

WestCoast, have you tried an M8, or are you going by other people's results? I have one, and I find your statements don't match my experience. Yes, the magenta issue does need solving. I will grudgingly accept a filter for that. Firmware does need updating for the readout timing issue. But even so, with the camera as is, the results are great, much in excess of any P&S and even a bit nicer than my 5D.

I've been grappling with this issue myself. This morning I had an email from my dealer in Germany telling me he has been in communication with Leica and has been assured they are aware of the problems and will correct them "at no additional cost."

I trust this person, and I trust Leica, so have decided to go ahead and have the M8 shipped to me. By now, Leica are painfully aware that mistakes were made and that they were potentially disastrous for the company. I have no doubt they will make this right.

Put the cash in a money-market account, and wait till Leica comes with a viable fix !
