I have been experimenting between the two and cannot see any major change in the quality of the image so I ask, do other owners share this thought? do you prefer to shoot with the EVF? Tia Absolutely. The resolution is not very high, but the instant feedback and the fact that I can use it with no problems whatsoever with glasses on makes the EVF very valuable. John Thawley Posted June 14, 2009 Share #8 Posted June 14, 2009 I use both... That said, there's a lot of value in the LCD screen. I've noticed for "street photography," unsuspecting pedestrians tend to assume you are shooting with a film camera... and since it's not up to your eye they're not as defensive. I also like the LCD screen for low angle shooting where getting my head/eye that low is not comfortable or realistic. I also use the LCD when mounted on a tripod and will even use a cable release. Lastly, throwing up the alignment grid over the LCD screen is a fantastic tool for composition. I honestly believe that the use of the LCD is grossly underrated. It is extremely useful and in my opinion, BETTER than the viewfinder. Composition-wise, what you see is what you get. For me, the proof in the pudding was watching my six year-old son. He's useless with a viewfinder but can shoot the lights out with the LCD. But, after all that, I hate cameras that don't have viewfinders. LOL - The EVF is NOT as bad as people make out, either. The preview is consistent so no matter what you think of the quality of the colors, the contrast will tell you where you're at, and that is a very valuable feature you don't find in a screen or viewfinder. The same is true for me. Another reason to use the EVF lies in the opportunity of dioptry correction. I can use the screen usefully only with my reading glasses... elgenper Posted June 14, 2009 Share #12 Posted June 14, 2009 Just my single vote against (I feel lonely.... ) I love the camera, but I never use the EVF other than as a pure emergency when I absolutely cannot see a thing on the LCD. I love composing the image on a good screen; it´s like going back to the waist level finder on my old Rolleiflex. One has to practise holding the camera steadily, but it is quite feasible. I´m not in the market for an auxiliary finder for my new D-Lux 4 either; that screen is even better than the Digilux 2 one. The EVF on my Panasonic G1 is a big step forward; I actually use it a lot. Even though it is an acquired taste, I wouldn't wish to be without it, it is - to me - superior in compesition and I wish the DLux 4 came with a VF as standard.. Moving from the Digilux 2 to my Nikon D300 is quite shocking - I wish the Digilux had a similar VF (I know, it's not technological possible). Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I am nearsighted, so (fortunately) the common complaint about having to hold the camera at arm's length doesn't apply to me. I'm able to hold it quite close to my face (~6 inches) and compose/focus by looking at the LCD over the top of my glasses. Like John, I've noticed that people tend to pay less attention to me when I use the LCD, presumably because this identifies me as a casual photographer and gives my otherwise strange behavior a context. It has advantages over optical in so much as it makes it easier to compose in darker conditions. I tend to use the EVF in preference to the LCD since it enables me to hold the camera steady at slower shutter speeds than is possible with the LCD. daveleo Posted June 14, 2009 Share #20 Posted June 14, 2009 i use the LCD when (1) i am wearing my glasses and (2) can rest the camera against something, as i must still hold it out at almost arms length. the EVF is great for me (don't need glasses or camera support). the LCD is the best when on a tripod .... can preview image with both eyes .... like ground-glass film focusing (gotta put some film in my Mamiya C330). the EVF is best most other times, for me. i don't quite get the complaints about the EVF. we actually have the best of both worlds ! another good question would be "what is your default display?" ... i simply have the grid showing to help me align the image.
