pmun Posted June 26, 2009 Share #21 Posted June 26, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) OK maybe this will help (I've censored the last word but insert your own choice of expletive). That hasn't helped much, but thanks. I'm a bit slow sometimes. I'll have another look later.
Advertisement Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Hi pmun, Take a look here It is difficult to be courteous!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted June 26, 2009 Share #22 Posted June 26, 2009 But that's the point - this is not the pub. You may be confusing your mediums here;) You're a person. You are conversing (via the internet) with other people. It's polite to call people by their names. I've met quite a number of other forum members over the years - most of them use their real identities here anyway - but we don't say 'hello M7lover, how are you', 'I'm fine Dogracer, oh look isnt' that Pixelpeeper over there.....' you get the gist. jaapv Posted June 26, 2009 Share #23 Posted June 26, 2009 But that's the point - this is not the pub. You may be confusing your mediums here;)Can I get you a drink by the way? No - it is a forum, which is a social interaction with a common interest-photography. Like a pub is a a social interaction with a common interest - aloholic beverages. Yes thank you, it's hot. mine will be a lager. Next round is on me
dcoombs Posted June 26, 2009 Share #24 Posted June 26, 2009 I think James' (earlygallery) point was that anonymity on the web gives some people the freedom to say things they wouldn't dream of saying if they were in a face to face conversation. Using your real name is a small step toward familiarity which tends to diminish the more extreme comments or language. Doug

There is only one me, and I behave consistently face to face or over the interweb. I can understand some people wanting anonymity for professional purposes, but that is up to them. jaapv Posted June 26, 2009 Share #26 Posted June 26, 2009 But that does not mean you cannot post a first name, even if it is an alias.

Marquinius Posted June 26, 2009 Share #28 Posted June 26, 2009 Quite. I use my real name here, as I do in the rest of my life. There is only one me, and I behave consistently face to face or over the interweb. I can understand some people wanting anonymity for professional purposes, but that is up to them. Regards, Bill Indeed, there's only one me and I must say I've enough trouble keeping that "me" on some kind of a straight course without wanting to try to "do" another "me" along side
pmun Posted June 27, 2009 Share #29 Posted June 27, 2009 I think the good thing about a forum is it removes much of the social and cultural baggage (including names) that accompanies face-to-face communication. Therefore it has more to do with the subject.

Marquinius Posted June 29, 2009 Share #34 Posted June 29, 2009 Funny thing ... I thought I was me too. Hmmm, so you must be someone else. But I'll treat you with respect, as I would like me to be treated as well. Is that self respect? Oh well ...
Kent10D Posted July 8, 2009 Share #35 Posted July 8, 2009 Right here on the Leica forum we have had problems with abusive users being banned and then simply re-registering under a series of pseudonyms ... even changing sex occasionally ... and continuing to abuse the forum and its members to satisfy some personal grudge or agenda. So whether fully enforceable or not, I agree that a rule requiring a real full name and contact info is necessary. It at least gives the mods the necessary leverage if and when it becomes necessary. Of course it's nice to be able to address people by their first name too.
vdb Posted July 9, 2009 Share #36 Posted July 9, 2009 The internet in general, and forums specifically, are kind of weird this way. I never feel comfortable hiding my name and identity and find it is nice to know names of others. I even like more info and wish more people would fill out their bios. I find it adds more meaning when interacting. It also adds meaning to the photos we all take. I understand why many feel less inhibited by being anonymous, but what is there to hide?
