Unfortunately the M5 is my only normal 35mm camera. I have cameras that each fill a different niche: the M5, Bronica ETRSi with pano 35mm back, Hasselblad 501C, Fuji GW690III, Polaroid 600SE, and Linhof Master Technika 4x5. But you’re right I should probably bite the bullet before it’s too late.

That sucks not having any other 35mm cameras, most people I've "seen" the past year that I've gotten into Leica gear have a M body or SLR system to fall back on. I've my old stash of Nikon SLR's to use while my Leica's were at DAG.

Still, even if you also have digital you can use I still would just get it serviced by DAG now to get it done while you can. The 8 week time frame for my M6's was due to backlog on his part. I just checked my records and he took 5 weeks on my M5 and 4 weeks on the M3. I guess it depends on how busy he is.

That's my concern for you, getting it done now while you can vs. not being able to down the road. Both Don and Sherry are in their 70's and IIRR Sherry did have a health issue a few years ago from what I read online.

Good luck

I talked myself out of this one for now

They can't tell me what the engraving is and I don't need a 2nd 1 that bad right now. I'm keeping my eyes pealed though

I'd agree - I've seen some sloppy user engraving. Overall though when KEH rates it a Excellent it is in very good condition. (I did get an "Excellent" M6 .85 from them that had been dropped on the rewind crank so it wouldn't fold open or closed, and the battery cover finish pretty damaged. Otherwise the camera was great so I just replaced those two parts.)

I've gotten several things from KEH the past year in "excellent or excellent +" condition and been very happy with them, my 1st M6 among them. If I didn't have the M5 I have now I would get that engraved 1 but I figure the 2nd M5 is going to be mainly a "collection" piece I can wait. If I find 1 in the next few months great, if not it's not like I plan on running combat with the 1 I have now.

Hello everyone, I'm a Leica M5 user but I can't find an answer online, maybe someone can help me. I would like to know if I can use the Trielmar Water 16/18/21.... Thanks a lot

You mean this one? I would say yes. The issue with the M-5 and older Leica lens that are collapsible is the rear elements protrude too far back into the M-5 as to damage the metering stalk. That element doesn't in the photo there so you should be fine.

Since that's a Leica produced lens you should be able to contact them and triple check to be sure but IMO you should be ok

yes that's it, but I read that some 21mm ones are also not suitable, thanks a lot

That's correct, but it mainly delt with Leica made lens before the M5 was released. The lens your interested in looks like a modern production.

I actually had a similar question with the Zeiss 28mm f2 lens, I found out I can use it if I want. I'll get 1 next time I see a nice used 1 for sale. I got sidetracked buying a 3rd M5 this week so now I have 3 of them (or will tomorrow when FedX drops it off, then I'll ship it to DAG for a CLA to play it safe 😁

I'm hoping to get the test roll back from the lab this weekend. And I'm up to 3 M5's now, I saw a 3rd 1 listed at KEH and bought it on a whim.

It was listed as a "3'lug" but it's a 129xxxxx serial number that was updated by Leica. Minor dent in it on a corner but very clean. It still has the Leica "L" service mark in the flange

It's going to DAG today for a CLA and battery conversion. I get it back the plan is the to use it and the new 2 lug as "shooters" and the 137-serial number as a collection piece since  it's in mint condition.

I see a chrome 1 in nice shape I might get it but we'll see. I'll have 3 M5's, 2 M6 "Classics" and a M3SS when DAG gets the new M5 serviced. That should be enough

I'd been looking at that one too - thanks for saving me from my GAS,

I kind of wish KEH would post pictures of the actual cameras they sell, I might have passed on it. They listed it as a "3 lug" but if I had seen the serial number and the minor dent I might have gotten this one from MPB instead

Used Leica M5 | MPB

It looks clean even though it lists in "good" condition and the KEH 1 I got listed in "excellent" condition. The chrome 1 is a 134XXXX serial number.

I'll wait until after the holidays and I pay myself back for the newest 1 before I decide if I really want a chrome M5. If I wasn't planning on buying a new desktop "gamer/photo editing" level ($2k budgeted for that) I would have gotten this instead of the 3rd M5

Used Leica MP Silver | MPB

I'm thinking of getting either a chrome MP or 2022 M6 as my "retirement present" to myself in 2027. I'll see what happens before then. Common sense says I should get a mirrorless SLR (I have a Nikon D7500 and D300s now) but I'm enjoying using old school film cameras more than I ever did using digital. Film has "soul" and I think more before I press the shutter release

You can return it. Why a CLA before even using it? If it ain’t broke…

more cameras than one needs is no substitute for the joy of making a good picture with a camera one has.

obviously we all know this but sometimes it helps to say it out loud (so that I can read it too).

I'm getting it CLA'd and battery updated for 2 reasons. 1 is peace of mind, it's a 54-year-old camera so who knows what shape it's actually in. 2nd is since it's a M5 you can count the number of repair techs in the world who can work on 1 with both hands, and still have spare fingers.

The only 2 techs in the US I know who will touch a M5 are Don at DAG and Sherry at Golden Touch. They're both in their 70's and Sherry has had some health issues the past few years from what I've heard. Don is supposedly training his to work on Leica's but there's only so much you can teach, some things have to be learned through experience
