The outlier, the rebel. For me the most beautiful of M cameras and after the first roll, the easiest and fastest to meter and shoot. What an underrated bit of design and engineering. Off I go for some sunset shots👌

I owned an M5 for a couple years and moved to a mint M4.  It is just so different from other M film cameras.   I enjoyed mine and still believe it is the most advanced of all M film camera designs (except M7 maybe).  It failed in the market place due to being quite expensive at the time vs the Nikon F and competition with the Leica CL which had an identical meter but cost one third to one half of the M5.  With the cult like worship of Leica found here, most people will not acknowledge that Leica spent over 10 years in the development of this camera.

I tried a few different bodies and the m5 was my favourite to use. I can meter with my eye in the viewfinder and see a live shutter speed to ensure I don’t go too slow. That was a clincher for me. I will buy a 2nd body once a good example crosses my path.

I also love the design. It’s beautiful in an industrial kind of way

Just seen this c. 50 years young M5:  https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/leica-m5/sku-2609503  –  If cameras could speak it could tell a few tales about its long life. The fact that it's offered with a 6 month guarantee says much about its original build quality – irrespective of its charismatic 'wabi sabi'.

Return of the Zombie M5 Thread 😁

My M5 right after I got it back from DAG a couple of months ago

What did DAG do to your M5? And how long did the service take? Costly?

A recent service to my M5 (where they were just supposed to lubricate rangefinder arm) has caused my meter to be way off. Lesson learned. I need to bring it to an M5 specialist like DAG or Sherry.

I had DAG do a full "overhaul" (his words) and battery update to modern specs. It feels like a new camera IMO.

$590 total with shipping, took about 6 weeks back in March. He's a bit slower now due to backlog, he did my 2 M6's since then and that took 7-8 weeks.

I understand Sherry is a tad cheaper but can take longer. I'm hoping to get a 2nd M5 the next few months and might let her do her thing on it. Not sure yet, good M5's are hard to find outside of Evilbay Japan and I had lousy luck there recently with a "mint" Nikon F2 that was anything but "mint"

Ok good to know..I’ll just use an external meter for now until I can let it go for 8 weeks. Eek!

If it were me and you have another M body film camera to use, I would bite the bullet and just get it done now while you can. I look at DAG and Golden Touch as resources that us film Leica owners won't have in a few years. Don and Sherry are both in their 70's. Don is training his son from what I've read but he won't have the same experience with M5's as his father has given the limited number of them on the market in "shooters" hands as it were.

Unfortunately the M5 is my only normal 35mm camera. I have cameras that each fill a different niche: the M5, Bronica ETRSi with pano 35mm back, Hasselblad 501C, Fuji GW690III, Polaroid 600SE, and Linhof Master Technika 4x5. But you’re right I should probably bite the bullet before it’s too late.
