Does anybody else experience the same problem or could there be a diffennt tolerance on either a black- or chrome M8 ? TIA Michiel
Advertisement Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Hi mhoutman, Take a look here 21-24-28 viewfinder does not fit on M8 ! ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted November 2, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 2, 2006 The problem is the foot which slides into the hot-shoe is fractionally too wide to fit between the vertical inside edges of the hot shoe. The foot is 18.7mm wide, the hot shoe width is 18.5mm, maybe 18.6mm wide. The foot can be removed (two screws) and a small amount of metal filed away but of course it will take off the black or chrome finish.... As Michiel says, it will be interesting to hear if anyone else has this problem. I might just be unlucky with mine. I'm going to email Leica CS. Marc, forgot to congratulate you with the M8, but I really hold my breath if this is the case with other units too. Rona!d Posted November 2, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 2, 2006 I use that finder on the M8 for the new Tri-Elmar 16/21/24, it works fine, no trouble. I sent the link to this thread to the head of the Leica customer service in Solms. regards, Ronald
Joe Mondello Posted May 9, 2007 Share #7 Posted May 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just picked up this finder and it is a snug fit, not an easy or loose fit, but it certainly fits. Maybe newer ones have been modded for the M8??
elansprint72 Posted May 9, 2007 Share #8 Posted May 9, 2007 (I will start a thread on the german forum too) Why don't you start a thread in the M8 forum

TIA Michiel Hi there, I have a recent one of these - it fits fine on both of my M8 bodies, not even snug, it definitely needs screwing down. Mind you, I really don't use it, as the frankenfinder seems to do a better job

EricC Posted May 10, 2007 Share #12 Posted May 10, 2007 Mine fits fine, no need to screw the locking ring down either. Regards Eric
luigi bertolotti Posted May 10, 2007 Share #13 Posted May 10, 2007 Curious and strange problem: the dimension of the hot shoe is I think one of the oldest standard in the camera industry... it's almost incredible that a lot of out-of-tolerance components has been built... and.. uhm... for a Leica product... gravastar Posted May 10, 2007 Share #14 Posted May 10, 2007 Mine was a very tight fit on the M8. I had to apply a trace of light oil on the runners of the foot before I could mount the finder. Oh, and I also discovered that the screw down clamp ring of the finder will gouge the chrome on the top of the camera shoe if it's tightened down too much . Bob. marknorton Posted May 10, 2007 Share #15 Posted May 10, 2007 Running a soft pencil lead along the contact surfaces solved the problem for me but like Jono, I prefer the new finder.

davidada Posted May 10, 2007 Share #17 Posted May 10, 2007 I have a chrome M8 and black finder fits fine Anyone want to swap finders chrome for black?
marknorton Posted May 10, 2007 Share #18 Posted May 10, 2007 I've just got out my micrometer and does some measurements. The hot shoe width on one chrome body is 18.61mm, the second (black) is 18.71mm and the third (black) is 18.63mm. The width of the foot on the 21/24/28 finder is 18.59mm, the width of the foot on the Frankenfinder is 18.57mm. All of which supports my experience that the FF is fine on all three bodies, the older finder is tight on one, fine on the other two. A clearance of 0.01mm one each side is not much - 1/10 of the thickness of a piece of paper. Roughly.
Mistral Posted May 10, 2007 Share #19 Posted May 10, 2007 One point of this thread might be that the finder serves well on the M8 for 28mm lenses @ the 21mm setting and for 35mm lenses @ the 28mm setting only, correct? Mine fits perfectly too. "Made in Japan" stamped on the base.
