5k what? Dollars, Euro, Yen?

In the UK, the new price 3 years ago was around £3300-3500. I bought mine, new, for £2700, 2 1/2 years ago, and I know of a new in box one selling fror around the same amount in the last couple of months.

Hard to compare to the original cost. The currency landscape has changed quite a bit since then. 5000$ seems a bit much, even if it is new. I would say something between 2500 and 3000 $ for a really nice one. But is some time since I looked at prices. The problem is comparing, as most are sold with a R8/9 included.

There was a thread about this about a year ago:

Is that the one that ffordes had? I looked several times at that (sigh).

Jaap,

Interesting thread, a year has changed things alot, not much extra cash floating around or if there is people are not spending, so I think prices are going down. My camera store where I buy most of my new Leica stuff has told me this will be the year for accessories.

Cheers Jan

I paid 2795 Euros back in October when i was in Cologne, Germany, they were asking 3900 Euros, but I talked them down since it did not have the case and other accessories, although they did get me a new focusing screen, and it had an extra battery hanging off the charger, but no adapters (lucky that I do have a M8 and the adapters from the M8 charger work with the DMR charger). I would say it is in otherwise excellent condition also. I was also able to get the VAT back, which lowered the price another $420 US, so I figure I got a decent price for it, even if I did have to teach it English. ;-)

sold mine for $4000 about a year ago..... at the time everyone many on the forum said interesting things like.....

the sellers of DMR's were getting $5000 but the buyers were only paying $3500..... in the end i think its a speciality item - finding a seller or a buyer isn't that easy. i sold mine on ebay

I looked on Ebay at completed items a Broke DMR sold for 1500.00+

Broke isn't to descriptive - many times Leica repair will do quite a bit for free or reasonable charges so depending what "broken" means that might be a reasonable deal. if i was to take a swag at the price i would pay for one in excellent shape -- i would say $2500.

Believe it or not, the price range is broad. The lowest price I have seen in either of used departments of B&H or Adorama ranges from $3200- 4000, in very good shape. I still get requests asking if I will sell mine & offers up to$4,000. I'm not selling this baby! There is still a strong market here in NYC. I ran into a pro last week & we shot some street stuff together. He had a cool flash drive, so I gave him copies of my RAW files. We went out again after he compared his $8,000 Canon files to the DMR. He was blown away & wanted to know where to buy one. I hooked him up. Also, about 3 weeks ago a lovely woman stopped me on Adam Clayton Boulevard and told me she was a longtime M3 user & had just bought a DMR from Ken Hansen in NYC. She told me the images it renders are like no others. Correct. Like art, the DMR has a value set by it's user & those wanting the chance to plumb it's depths. This is not a mass-market, fair traded item. That's why I believe there's such a disparity in the pricing, which I think will continue. This is Legendary gear!

Ben at $4000 i would recommend sell and quickly, heck you could probably buy 2 DMR 's for that and have one for backup! I'm in NY as well (actually just over the line in Ct) and i don;t see eveidence of the strong DMR market you refer to.

I might have the opportunity to buy a demo DMR. Where can I find firmware updates? Just looked on the Leica Camera website and could not find it. Thanks.

Go to: Leica Camera AG - Downloads

and scroll down to: 'Software- & Firmwareupdates'

As you will realise if you have read the various recent DMR threads, there are many of us who think that the DMR with the 1.3 upgrade produces RAW images which are even better than those from the M8. I'd certainly recommend that you take the opportunity offered.

You can find the updates here:

Leica Camera AG - Downloads

Also, you can read some ideas on my page about the DMR

leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Pages - Leica DMR dSLR digital back sample photos and test

As for prices and availability, if one has patience to search for a few weeks, one can find DMR's. Don't panic, and I think 4,000$ is not an unreasonable price if one really want it. 3,000$ is probably what one should aim for in buying one (but expect to pay perhaps a little bit higher).

There was one recently for 2,000$ in USA at theonlineoutpost.com, but that was a fraud advertisement ("if it looks too good to be true, it usually is").

Last week I purchased up a used DMR for EUR 2.200,- in Germany. It was delivered without the boxes and papers but all accessoires were included. My only regret regarding the purchase of the DMR is that I didn't purchase one sooner. It's been pure joy rediscovering my R lenses using the DMR.

Thanks Thorsten! Your DMR page is very informative!
