Hint: the mount IS a M mount... :)

Hmm, interesting - it appears to have a maximum aperture of f/1.4 and stops down to f/5.6 but the depth of field scale is only marked from f/4 and extends to f/16. Is this a modified cine lens, Luigi?

Pete.

I seem to remember a Sonnar 50/1.5 of that shape, but this one is 1.4....But wait - there is an external aperture coupling. Nikon No- 45 degrees off...??? The alleged M-mount is clearly an LTM-M adapter ;) It is very strange that the aperture ring stops at 5.6, but the DOF scale runs to 16. And that lens mount looks like it is home-made from an espresso holder, even half-hiding the aperture ring. It might be a Kinoptik conversion from Arriflex, but it would vignette in that case.

Do the DOF marks have anything to do with the optics inside the lens body? If so, this would appear to be something in the 15mm to 18mm range, depending upon what circle of confusion the DOF markings are based on.

(Or maybe not...) :)

That would be consistent with say a 20 mm 16 cine lens.

Distagon 18 for Contarex (a lens I consider a historical masterpiece) WITH a Contarex to M adapter (no RF coupled) which I even didn't know existed... before finding an Italian lab who makes it... in very small numbers... :). Contarex lenses DO NOT have a f/stop ring... they used a absurdly complicated mechanism of coupling with a ring on the body front... so this adapter has a f/stop ring of its own... coupled with Contarex lenses' internal "actuator ring" which explains that strange little scale 1,4 to 5,6...to keep track of max aperture :o

You can see my face reflected above the iris... M8+Summarit 75 are exactly in the iris center :p

I got the adapter 2 days ago, and made some test shots in house... maybe tonight I'll post some example: this is an exciting lens... I have also the Distagon 25 and am curios to test it too: of course, practically impossible to use longer focals due to focusing issue, even if I'll surely try some shot at infinity with the Olympia Sonnar 250... :)

Pity I haven't another 18... a face to face test of this lens with new Distagon 18 and new Super Elmar 18 would be a lot funny : but I plan to take some trial shot 15 Heliar/18 Contarex/21 Elmarit asph at different distances - subject same size...;)

It works, and works fine : a pair of full frame shots and a 100% crop from one, with M8 at 320 - tungsten setting - Distagon 18 for Contarex at f 5,6

no UVIR at he moment... I would not choose such a terrible hue for my chairs' fabrics :)

100% crop from above

Quick but rather precise comparision : Heliar 15 - Distagon 18 for Contarex - Elmarit Asph 21 (no UVIR-lens recognition off) all three at 5,6 - 320 ASA. Different distances to achieve same FOV. The first series (no full frame) allows a good evaluation of barrel distortion (keyboard in foreground).

Heliar 15

This 2nd series (same order 15-18-21) of 100% crops from the previous ones gives an idea of respective sharpness. No sharpening at all in LR.

An observation on colors : looking at wall tapestry - piano's wood - Schubert's cover page, and having the originals behind me..., Distagon has the better balancing and fidelity (but, remember, all 3 unfiltered); indeed, at its times, Contarex lens set was a lot praised for its color rendition, but this result is so surprising that I think I'll make a more complete test in a simpler-cleaner lighting situation.
