Does Leica still make the 21 f2.8 ASPH?

The Elmarit-M 21mm Asph was introduced back in 1997. While expensive back then, it was and still is a fantastic super wide-angle lens. Certainly one of the best made by Leica as J Borger wrote. But after almost 10 years, and with the introduction of the first M digital, it is quite possible that Leica has decided to discontinue this 21mm f/2.8 Asph in favor of a more modern, up-to-date lens designed to give even better performance with the M8 (but which could still be used with film Leica M cameras).

Just a thought but could it be possible that the recently announced C Biogon 21mm f/4.5 ZM lens has caught Leica's attention? A brand new more compact 21mm Asph f/3.5 perhaps? I agree with Jack that the digital M8's excellent high-ISO performance might represent a new paradigm shift for Leica, which could translate into slightly slower and more compact M lenses. I am going to a Leica demo day tomorrow at Camtec Photo in Montreal (Canada). I will ask the Leica reps about the 21mm Elmarit Asph - along with a few other questions about the M8 (6-bit coding and Capture ONE post-processing , DNG and lossless compression, SDHC support, etc..).

Regards,

John F.

This is a marvelous thread! Amazing how quickly we collectively can take into account cost of production, new product, competitor's product, design trends, dealer inventories etc. Excellent and promising analysis all round!

However, I contacted the relevant party at Leica Allendale and received the following:

"Thanks for the message. I can assure you that it is simply a mistake on our website. I already informed our internet team to update the website.

"Sorry for the confusion."

Leica marketing is similar to the astonishingly bad defensive play of the Detroit Tiger pitching staff: they're going to lose the World Series due to something no one expected or even forecasted.

Ship the bloody M8!

If you want to be understood on a international forum, a reference to baseball is maybe not the most efficient way. The "World-Series" are US only. I know that some US citizens and your president think that the US of A are indeed the entire world and that the rest is just a bombing test field for the Air Force new toys but I hope this is not your case and that you are just a baseball fan :D

Sage advice! They should hire you and get on with things! Give them a call and see if you can’t stir up a little action.

(How do they load new firmware into the cameras, and how long does it take to do this?)
