London - Spring in the air meet?

Brian! Suggestions?

One I have depends on the tide tables on the Thames. Meet at Festival Hall and walk along the Thames Beach (if tide is out, obviously) until we get to Bankside, or beyond depending on our energy levels. Then over the Millenium Bridge and walk back to the Abbey or the Penderels Oak on Holborn.

Alternatively, meet at Somerset House (fantastic architecture), then walk along Embankment (great Thames views) to Temple (more architecture/history) to Chancery Lane, up the lane to Holborn and the pub.

Or maybe somewhere where there are more spring like opportunities - like one of the London parks?

Just a couple thoughts.

BTW March is out for me but April is possible.

Sounds like a good idea Louis - the rest of March is also out for me (KL & Cambodia) - both routes have their merits - personally i would favour the Thames Beach as I've never done it.

Possible Easter Saturday 11th or the 18th April? Who's game for it?

I'll mention this on the LULM Group page.

I'll check the tide tables. The 11th or 18th are OK for me, btw, although I'd prefer the 11th.

Sounds good to me, Louis!

As either an alternative or as a later meet up, does Greenwich appeal to anyone? Meet at St Christopher's Inn beside the railway station and either munch and drink and then stroll, or stroll and then munch and drink (or both ).

There's plenty to see and do in Greenwich: thriving indoor and outdoor markets, views across to Canary Wharf and Docklands, the Foot Tunnel under the Thames, Imperial War Museum, Royal Naval College, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich Park for superb views across London, Greenwich Observatory and Timeball ... (Sadly the Cutty Sark is still shrink-wrapped.)

I like your idea, as well. The tunnel is definitely a great experience if you have not done it before and Greenwich is a treat in terms of photographic possibilities. Much easier to get to now thanks to the DLR (if it is running which always a consideration on the day).

What do others think?

I think I'm going to have to run yet another poll - choice of venue and choice of date!

I must admit I"m easy as to locaion - both are good and we can do them both over 2009 - they both require 1/2 decent weather IMO.

I can say that the 18th is now looking dodgy for me - the 25th would be better.

Tides, Louis?

Looking at John's tide table, the 25th does not look good for a "beach" walk, unless we want to combine this with a evening/sunset-ish outing along the Thames Walk? Of course there is the 18th, when the daytime tides look acceptable.

Thoughts?

I shall be away for the last 2 weeks of March so may not be monitoring the internet quite so much as usual. Please bear that in mind.

Looking through the responses there are a majority of people who can make the 25th but not the 18th. I suggest we go for April 25th and I have a suggestion, which is that we do Somerset House as per my original e-mail because there is an exhibition on there that we might be interested in visiting:

Somerset House - Visual Arts

... and its free!

We could convene for the Exhibition at say 11:00AM, then go for a wander along the embankment and through the Inns of Court starting at 12:00AM and aim to get to either the Abbey or the Penderel's Oak at 1PM. People could decide to join at the point that best suits them?

The tide will wait for us on another day and Greenwich will always be there as well (in fact it might be interesting to do Greenwich on June 21st which is a Sunday this year?).

Apologies to anyone who would prefer the 18th, actually, if you twist my arm, I might just be up for heading down to the Festival Hall at 1PM on the 18th for a walk along the beach with the missus, in any case.

Sounds good to me, Louis, count me in!

And I shall spare a moment for, and raise a glass to, those brave men who fought and gave their lives at Gallipoli because 25th April will be ANZAC Day.

(Incidentally what's the significance of 21st June to Greenwich: Summer Solstice and therefore the longest day of the year perhaps? BTW, 21st is a week after Hessenpark ...)

Hi Brian, Louis, lads,

Sounds like a great plan, would it be OK to tag along?

I should be in London on the 25th and would love to join you. I had a great time last meeting and look forward to picking your brains further!

Al
