ail Posted March 2, 2009 Share #1 Posted March 2, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Over on that auction site, 'shphoto-gmbh' is offering brand new Leica-R kit at very good prices. Have any forum members dealt with this vendor? If so, would they mind commenting on their experiences? Is the merchandise truly new, and does it indeed come with a full international warranty, as claimed? I am tempted by a couple of R lenses that are listed at very good prices. Of course, whether or not one should be buying R lenses at this point in time is another matter altogether. Thanks in advance.
Advertisement Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Hi ail, Take a look here Feedback sought on vendor. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted March 2, 2009 Share #2 Posted March 2, 2009 SH Photo advertise here, and are a legitimate company. I am sure that the descriptions of the goods that they currently have on offer are all correct and above board. If I needed any more R glass, I would have no hesitation in buying from them under this current offer.
jaapv Posted March 2, 2009 Share #3 Posted March 2, 2009 I know there are some members that were not quite happy, but I have bought from them on a regular basis and all transactions were handled correctly and fast and the goods were as described or better. ail Posted March 2, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted March 2, 2009 Many thanks for your replies, Andy and Jaapv. Andy I don't see any ads from SH Photo in the classifieds. Have their ads expired? Jaapv, I will search this forum for the discussions on SH Photo.
peter_n Posted March 2, 2009 Share #5 Posted March 2, 2009 They are the used channel for the high-priced eBay dealer photo-arsenal. Sometimes they do have very good prices. I've bought from them once and the lens was exactly as described.
SteveYork Posted March 2, 2009 Share #6 Posted March 2, 2009 I know the prices on some of the goods offered on Ebay are VAT-excluded. So if you're in the EU another whopping 20% needs to be added. But here in the states, the prices being offered for new equipment, with the 1 year international warranty, is about what mint used equipment would sell. That's very good. ail Posted March 2, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted March 2, 2009 Peter_n, Thanks. I have seen Arsenal's listings on ebay. Was never tempted to bid. I can't believe this is the same store.
peter_n Posted March 2, 2009 Share #9 Posted March 2, 2009 Well, the sh stands for "second-hand" so their stuff is used. A few weeks ago I bought a CZJ lens for my Exakta from them and the thing is perfect. They reduced the price a couple times because it wasn't selling and it isn't a bargain but still a very good price. If you buy from them ask them to send by Deutsche Bundespost and the lens will come into the US with no fees. See the recent thread here on importing into the US, towards the end of it I posted the label from my delivery from them, you'll see the name on it is the same as the guy who owns photo-arsenal. andybarton Posted March 2, 2009 Share #10 Posted March 2, 2009 All the stuff for sale via the link above (when it comes round) is described as "new". Whether they have a load of used stuff to get rid of via eBay, I don't know. For example: Leica R 1:2,8/70-180 mm VARIO-APO-ELMARIT-R 11279 With EU warranty. Brand new with full Leica International Warranty, from Leica Authorized Dealer! This unique, exclusive offer is available only at SH photo GmbH. We offer the Leica R9 cameras, lenses and system accessories Price incl. 19% VAT. Leica are obviously using this outlet to clear their shelves of what remaining stock of R stuff they have. andybarton Posted March 2, 2009 Share #11 Posted March 2, 2009 Andy I don't see any ads from SH Photo in the classifieds. Have their ads expired? They have one of the banner ads at the top of the page, which come round in rotation. They are not in the classifieds.
jaapv Posted March 2, 2009 Share #12 Posted March 2, 2009 I've bought new stuff from them as well in the past. It is quite a big operation in terms of number of items stocked.

ail Posted March 2, 2009 Author Share #15 Posted March 2, 2009 Yes, I was looking at their new stuff, the R zooms in particular. ail Posted March 2, 2009 Author Share #16 Posted March 2, 2009 Thanks to all who responded to my original query. It seems shphoto-gmbh is indeed a reputable dealer. I will follow their listings to see if any of the zooms I am interested in are reduced in price over the next few weeks. Now for the million dollar (or Euro ) question: Is this a good time to be buying R lenses in the first place, even at (relatively) bargain prices? For me it all comes down to the digital R10 being able to take MF lenses with auto-diaphragm operation and coupled metering. Anyone care to speculate on this? lct Posted March 2, 2009 Share #17 Posted March 2, 2009 ...For me it all comes down to the digital R10 being able to take MF lenses with auto-diaphragm operation and coupled metering... You're not alone As long as i'm not 100% sure of this i've decided not to buy new R lenses in any way. Now some Boris' new prices are cheaper than second hands on eBay so YMMV. stuny Posted March 2, 2009 Share #18 Posted March 2, 2009 Ail - At Photokina Dr. Kaufmann said the R10 was coming, it would be autofocus with new lenses and would be backward compatible with current R lenses. I take that to mean, auot diaphram & coupled metering. We can infer by looking at the size and style of the S2 that the R10 will continue much of the look of the R8/R9 and be smaller than the R9/DMR. My sense is that Leica is selling out of their MF lenses. A dealer recently advised me that the 280/4 is no long available, for example. The R10 will probably take the older MR lenses, at least the most recent ones that have the contacts for the R9, but there will be updated AF lenses, probably with new optical formulas too.
