Advertisement Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Hi Michael Hiles, Take a look here "Do you know the world ?" -- Competition --. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
vertekijker Posted May 15, 2013 Share #12042 Posted May 15, 2013 Yes, Michael, it is Erasmus (1466 –1536), the great humanist. That should make it easy to find the place name... ----------------- Frans
Michael Hiles Posted May 15, 2013 Share #12043 Posted May 15, 2013 Google Images tells me Rotterdam (his home town?).
vertekijker Posted May 15, 2013 Share #12044 Posted May 15, 2013 That is right Michael. He lived there for only four years, but Rotterdam was smart to claim such a famous thinker as their own. Your turn! ----------- Frans
Michael Hiles Posted May 15, 2013 Share #12045 Posted May 15, 2013 Thanks Frans - guessing and google sometimes pays off. This next one is - at least to me - somewhat obscure. I had never heard of the place until a week before visiting. Welcome, dear visitor! Dirk Van der Herten Posted May 15, 2013 Share #12048 Posted May 15, 2013 Are we in Suzhou, near Shangai?
Michael Hiles Posted May 15, 2013 Share #12049 Posted May 15, 2013 Holy Hannah! That was fast. Suzhou it is. Venice of China, it is said. I had never heard of it before - which was a bit humbling since it has a catchment area of 10 million people. We went on a ride on the canals in one of these boats. The "Gondolier" began to sing - a Chinese version of what I suppose was O Solo Mio - but the song was old Chinese which was to our western ears, well, not O Solo Mio. And she bloody well wanted to be paid.
Dirk Van der Herten Posted May 16, 2013 Share #12050 Posted May 16, 2013 Holy Smoke, am I correct? It was just a guess. An interesting photo, Michael. Welcome, dear visitor! gdb Posted May 16, 2013 Share #12051 Posted May 16, 2013 Hatchepsout temple of Deir El-Bahari on the left bank of the Nile, facing Luxor, in Egypt. This view, from the top of the cliff above the temple, hides the main part of it, which is still under restoration.. Been there for the first time when I was 14... Dirk Van der Herten Posted May 16, 2013 Share #12052 Posted May 16, 2013 Good to hear from you, Gérard. You are *very* close, but it is not Hatchepsut we are looking for. You recognized correctly this shot was taken on the cliff right above Hatchepsut's temple, but the temple in the photo is another one. So the name is the king is ... ? stuny Posted May 16, 2013 Share #12053 Posted May 16, 2013 Just a guess, though my Egypt expert friend Gerard pointed me in the right direction. I think this might be the smaller Mentuhotep temple
Dirk Van der Herten Posted May 16, 2013 Share #12054 Posted May 16, 2013 Yes, Stuart, pharao Mentuhotep II was the name we were looking for. Gérard has a very good memory, having recognized the place after such a long time. Even if the spot from where the photo was shot is right above the famous Hatchepsut temple, one can only see the Mentuhotep temple, right next to it. In order to see Hatchepsut temple from the cliff, one would need climbing gear.
stuny Posted May 16, 2013 Share #12055 Posted May 16, 2013 (edited) I think Gerard should be next - I never would have gotten it without his aiming me there. My initial thought was Middle East, not Egypt. Edited May 16, 2013 by stuny
gdb Posted May 17, 2013 Share #12056 Posted May 17, 2013 Dear Stuart, Dear Dirk, Thank you so much for your congratulations. Actually, I was so eager to give my answer as quickly as possible, that I did not take the time to think a little more thoroughly about the name of this little temple close to Hatschpsout's. It is also true that to look like a real Pharaoh, this lady used to wear the same false beard as her male "colleagues". This made me consider her as a "king" in this particular case... So, my answer was wrong, and I gladly put the "Olympic Torch" of this nice game in Stuart's hands Very sincerely Gérard
stuny Posted May 17, 2013 Share #12057 Posted May 17, 2013 Thank you Dirk & Gerard. For this one the country should be pretty easy, but the specific location may be a bit more difficult.
