Guest PhotoWebb.co.uk Posted December 2, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 2, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a good friend of mine in the office Christmas dip and he is a big fan of Leica cameras and specifically street photography. I am looking for a nice photo book from a famous photographer who used Leica equipment. If anybody could give me some recommendations they would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Daniel

roguewave Posted December 3, 2008 Share #6 Posted December 3, 2008 Daniel. A fine book. If your friend loves NYC & the streets, here are 2 from one of my two favorite photographers. Both by the incomparable Bruce Davidson; 1) Central Park & 2) East 100th Street. Both are mind benders and seminal works of the most beloved B&W street photographer of native New Yorkers. His one time companion/lover/collaborator is a close second: Diane Arbus. The recent publication, Revelations, is aptly named. No current or past native New York produced as stunning and disturbing a portfolio as this genius.

RRG Posted December 4, 2008 Share #10 Posted December 4, 2008 Daniel, You may want to look into the books by Ernst Haas (now out of print but available from good used book stores); Born in Austria but he lived most of his life in New York City across from the Carnegie deli on 7th street, he died in 1987. He began with black and white photography but became the preeminent Leica R kodachrome photograpaher of the 1960's. 70's and 80's.He had many assignments for Life magazine as well. His major photographic books were: The Creation ( his interpretation of the book of Genesis) printed in several editions. In America Himalayn Pilgrimage Realms of Light and Color Photography His kodachromes are all managed by Getty Images. He wrote about the nature of photgraphy and the role of "image" in human experience with as much talent as he possessed for creating his kodachromes. Best of luck in finding his books. mhoersch Posted December 4, 2008 Share #11 Posted December 4, 2008 Probably most famous of all is Henri Cartier-Bresson, and every single image he has ever made was taken with a Leica M. So, any of his books might make an inspiring gift for your friend.
roguewave Posted December 4, 2008 Share #12 Posted December 4, 2008 Lots of so called famous photographers never used a leica... it's about results:eek: something that too many disregard That's clearly not a recommendation, nor particularly insightful. Stating the obvious may comfort some, but.....
abrewer Posted December 4, 2008 Share #13 Posted December 4, 2008 Mr. Unsworth has impeccable taste in the arts generally, and I second his nomination of Edouard Boubat Chez Brewer has both 'The Monograph' (Publisher: Genevieve Anhoury) and 'Its a Wonderful Life' (Publisher: Assouline) on the living room coffee table atop albums of Odilon and Redoute Boubat was a singular talent, in every respect as good as it gets, with a Leica camera in his hands
wattsy Posted December 4, 2008 Share #14 Posted December 4, 2008 Ralph Gibson's Deus ex Machina ticks all your boxes but is, unfortunately, out of print. Gibson's Brasil should still be obtainable new but, although it's a fine book, it is clear in this selection that he's not quite the photographer he once was. garyp Posted December 4, 2008 Share #15 Posted December 4, 2008 Robert Nice to see another big fan of Haas. He was [no, still is] my favorite photographer of all time. I would add that, to me, it's worth it to find a 1st edition copy of the ''Creation"; I think the colors are better. And also for Daniel, I'd recommend finding works by Alex Webb, David Allan Harvey, and Bill Allard.
jpattison Posted December 4, 2008 Share #16 Posted December 4, 2008 Here's my recommendation, obvious, but inspiring.... Amazon.co.uk: Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Man, the Image and the World: A Retrospective: Philippe Arbaizar, Jean Clair, Robert Delpire, Peter Galassi: Books John
