I think this is about you. No-one knows Leica exept a small sub-culture of camera lovers.

....One of my non-photography inclined friends asked what sort of lens my M8 had as he did not even know that Leica makes lenses (or indeed that Leica was a camera brand). When I said Leica he seemed disappointed - I guess he was expecting Zeiss. Fine with me, I want to use it for making pictures not as a fashion statement.....

To this I'll add the conversation I had with a Canon EOS 1D III user; he didn't see the point to the new S2 - you see he actually thought his uber EOS was a medium format sensor sized camera. These same people wouldn't know a Hassey, Linhof, Contax, etc,. either.

......."A person who buys a Leica is making a statement about themselves and what they want to do"......(sbopple)

Well, I never bought a Leica to make a statement about myself. I bought it because I liked the images it made, and yes, the lifelong value of it's quality.

I don't think this statement is about me, individually. The previous posted pictures shows that you can take a great picture with any camera. Just like you can paint a great picture with any brand of oil paint, if you have the right person and subject. I mean...egg tempra is exactly what it is...eggs and pigment. Pictures with such a rudimentary medium can be fantastic.

One of the reasons I forked over the money for my C-Lux 2 (yeah okay it's not a TRUE Leica) was an article I read recently by Leica's president for an American photo magazine about the development of their cameras. He admitted that the Leica's lag behind a little in terms of pixel count but Leica wants to move slow and deliberately because they want to deliver the best picture possible to the ccd and not rely on software to make a picture great.

I like that. To me that makes it worth spending the extra $150 on a little point and shoot camera. IF I had the money I'd buy an old Hassleblad or Leica in a heartbeat. Not because I think it will make me a pro, but I like the feeling I'm part of history and a group of people who care a little more about the craft.

That's why people will shell out $5k on a camera and will continue to do so, and that's why I'm sure whatever happens in digital photography, Leica will be there someplace.

And anyways, you guys are missing the point. I never said it was a fashion statement. Not much of a fashion statement if you have to explain to everyone what the camera is. It's a statement that you want to take a better picture, as was said previously. Whether or not the camera is actually better is besides the point. The point is, everyone here - when they pick up their Leica - they feel like they can take a great shot.

How many Canon or Nikon people feel that way? I have a Canon myself I use for motorsports and it's a fine camera. I'll buy another one for that kind of photography any day of the week. But it's a tool, it's not something I feel like is a part of me or can elevate me. Yet with that little Leica, even when taking pictures of something as mundane as a kid's birthday party it makes me think about the shots I'm taking and how can I make them better.

That's the value in the name brand.

I would love to see an R10 with an image sensor in league with the M8 but I dread to think of what it will cost

About two grand sterling on the used market.

The R8/9 (with the DMR) already has a sensor better than the M8's and has done for about 3 years.

Just shot this one with a 3-cam Summicron 90/2 @ f/2.8.

Great to retrieve the 24x36 FoV and what a lens!

Conrad, thanks to have advised it to me. :)

Hi Wilfred

I too have been going back to using my 5D recently, with Leica R glass. Partly in anticipation of buying the 5D MkII (which I have already pre-ordered after trying it at photokina).

Here is a black and white shot with a 21mm f4 super-angulon R lens

104806402.jpg

I like this photo for a couple of reasons (other than the sheep and compo which works well in b/w). First the lens has a very good resolution, and here was at wide upen.. the out of focus areas work well. I took this photo whilst with an Italian professional who has a book published of sheep related black & white photos in the area. He (now) uses a 5D having previously used large format or Contax 35mm. We edited this photo at his house in Italy and he was blown away with the resolution quality of the lens - far better, he said, than his Canon 24mm f1.4 L particularly given the high ISO. It's also a lot cheaper, used, than the Canon lens (I think I paid 500 euros)

Second, it's at 1600 ISO. Now, I love the M8 for many thing, but one thing I hate is high ISO. Anything over 320 ISO for me is unusable. This 1600 on the 5D is about the same as 320 on the M8, and for sure better than 640 on the M8. That's always my experience with the M8 v 5D, and given I like low light sometimes, it's a major drawback of the M8.

I understand high ISOs should be improved on the M8 MkII, and when I tries it at photokina, on screen at least 3200 looked better than 320 on the M8. Plus I get aditional megapixls on a good full frame sensor, so if I ant to make a big print it's fine. And of course I now have a whole range of R lenses (I have been snapping them up on ebay, some at some great low prices) ready to go.

I've already sold some equipment to cover the cost of the 5D MkII, including a couple of old Leica M cameras - but I won't part with my M2, M6 or Konica Hexar RF and my M lenses. The dilema I now face is with my M8. It is a lovely camera and I have really enjoyed using it (for less than one year), but after I get the 5D mk II I am worried I will hardly use it... OK there are times when you want a light camera, but if I want to take the best shots I will prefer the slight additional weight and size, and if it's for walking around late in the evening, I will prefer a camera that does well in high isos. I'd love to keep the M8 as it is a beautiful; camera, but at its high price it can't be justified to keep if it's not usued a lot in my opinion. Depending on the used price I can get, I'll be tempted to see it. Selling that and the 5D will pay for quite a lot I would imagine!

Nick

I suspect good photographers are always thinking about how to make the shot better. The camera is irrelevant to that process, and the brand name even less so.
