charlesphoto99 Posted October 5, 2008 Share #21 Posted October 5, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm actually thinking of getting out of the M8 rat race altogether. I know I'll take a big hit, but I feel like I just got better results with my M7 for some reason (I'm not talking image quality per se, just working style). And the new Nikons with Zeiss glass seem to take care of my digital needs. Selling the M8 would also allow me to dump a few lenses (and use a couple of others I don't currently - like the backfocusing 35 lux). With my first child on the way, camera purchases are going to come to an end. I really want one of those Fuji 6X7 folders coming out though.
Advertisement Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Hi charlesphoto99, Take a look here Has Anyone Deferred a Purchase B/C of the Economy?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
johnastovall Posted October 5, 2008 Share #22 Posted October 5, 2008 No, I'm spending it as fast as I can before it takes a wheelbarrow full of dollars to buy a loaf of bread. Have a Canon 5DII on order and keep thinking about an M8.2 but need a new printer first.
leicapages Posted October 5, 2008 Share #23 Posted October 5, 2008 why would it ? There are so many other (potential) purchases that this is just one of them.
JBA Posted October 6, 2008 Share #24 Posted October 6, 2008 I've changed from acquisition mode to mainenance and repair mode. My 90 Summilux-R had a sluggish diafragm and I noticed oil on the blades, so in it went for service. Also, my M6 could use a CLA. But I wouldn't say I've deferred any purchases, having just bought an MP and 50 'Lux pre-asph last month.

fotografr Posted October 6, 2008 Share #26 Posted October 6, 2008 Is anyone putting off purchasing photography gear, or even media, because of the worries over the economy, the banks, the stock market, etc? I have put off buying one of these, but not much else. I think it's our patriotic duty to keep the economy going by buying as much as we can. I don't think my wife is into that logic, however. fotografr Posted October 6, 2008 Share #27 Posted October 6, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Definitely I have not deferred a Leica purchase because of the economy. I have decided against buying an M8.2 because of the framelines... This is actually becoming humorous. :D
Michael-IIIf Posted October 6, 2008 Share #28 Posted October 6, 2008 I bought an M8 last week because I figured my money was better invested in German metal and electronics than in the nebulous smoke-and-mirrors world of banking. I might buy a couple of lenses for the same reason!
patashnik Posted October 6, 2008 Share #29 Posted October 6, 2008 Absolutely. And to go one step further, it has made me put my M8 and 35mm and 50mm Summilux-M up for sale.

With Allan, Patashnik, you have my commiserations. This economic climate will no doubt touch us all in some way, I hope in your case it is a brief Leica hiatus and that you will be reunited sometime in the future - possibly with even better kit. patashnik Posted October 7, 2008 Share #32 Posted October 7, 2008 With Allan, Patashnik, you have my commiserations. This economic climate will no doubt touch us all in some way, I hope in your case it is a brief Leica hiatus and that you will be reunited sometime in the future - possibly with even better kit. Better kit? Both of those lenses are the ASPH versions, can't get much better than that Financially, I'm in actually doing quite nicely at the moment. But with everything crashing on the stock markets, and the fact that I got to see in person what a Nikon D3 and Canon 5D mkII could do - I'm making a move. So, instead of pulling the cash out of my pocket, I'm selling off the Leica stuff for the umpteenth time. I have been offered some freelance work that make a move towards dSLR tempting. I'll be keeping my MP and some less expensive lenses for shooting, though. I'm not the type of person that gets emotionally attached to my gear, so whatever I miss - I can always pick up at a later time. Leica has always, and will always be luxury items to me. This is a time for cash in the pocket.
adan Posted October 7, 2008 Share #33 Posted October 7, 2008 I'm gonna hold off on upgrading either M8 to new shutter/viewfinder - but there are other factors besides just wanting to let the plastic money cool off for a while. Such as - I can't bear to part with a body right now for 2 months (or more). Other than that, there really aren't any purchases I had in mind anyway. Of the lenses in existence, I have what I want. A 16 prime is obviously no closer than next March, if ever. Frankly, working in a failing industry (newspapers) in a failing economy, I suppose I should be worried. But I can't see wasting stomach tissue worrying about something out of my control anyway. Interesting to see what this does to Leica - the Euro is dropping against the dollar which might mean some rebates showing up over here in the US. And they may be needed, if we get into a worse recession. I hope none of Herr Dr. Kauffman's millions were tied up in any of the toxic alphabet-soup debt devices and that whoever does the firm's banking is on the stable side. denise Posted October 8, 2008 Share #34 Posted October 8, 2008 A little OT, but sort of related. Under what circumstances would you purchase a body and a lens from a local dealer as oppose to from a website? Assuming that you are buying a new body and new lens. I noticed that some dealers offer set purchase for M8, but the lenses they offer are not the ones I want. 6% sales tax on a couple thousand purchase is quite a bit of money. I would like to save as much as I could. Thanks.
stevelap Posted October 8, 2008 Share #35 Posted October 8, 2008 Not deferred, the product I want (S2) is not yet available. I might consider some divestments though:( in order to fund a future purchase, something I might not have needed to do in different circumstances. I bought an MP3 kit from my local dealer last December because I couldn't find one anywhere else. Usually I buy from Tony Rose at Popflash, eBay, or forums like this. Welcome to the forum BTW! rob_x2004 Posted October 9, 2008 Share #38 Posted October 9, 2008 Dont look at me. We have a pretty robust economy and no real issues and our dollar is down to sixty eight something from parity. And thats the exchange rate, not what my bank will charge me for US$ purchases. Imagine having to pay a dollar forty eight for a dollar ice cream if I went to McDonalds at your place Allan. For an Australian, Tony Roses prices, and secondhand from anywhere prices, look pretty seedy at the moment.
KM-25 Posted October 10, 2008 Share #39 Posted October 10, 2008 Dow's below 9000 Still feeling flush? Makes you wonder how bad it could possibly get. I am so flush with gear and extremely valuable rare films that I have a good bit of liquid assets to push if this gets much worse. And wow, how about Iceland? guywalder Posted October 10, 2008 Share #40 Posted October 10, 2008 but I feel like I just got better results with my M7 for some reason same here, my pet theory is its because there is no temptation to chimp, and knowing that means I try a bit harder to get it right
