More to come...

It seemed strange to me that the Leica's info on launching the M8.2 plus 4 new lenses did not create an uproar "And what about the R10?". I did not see any comments like this anywhere on the forum (did I miss something here?) which seems suprprising when you consider that usually even the rumor about a rumor can keep threads busy for weeks.

So when I got the latest newsletter today that Leica apparentyl will launch "another product" at Photokina, I started wondering. An R10 after all?

Bernd: possibly because the "what about an R10?" rumors have already been done to death over the past few MONTHS, let alone weeks. Exhaustion? Resignation?

Also because the "more to come" rumors began immediately on the M news, so many have just been holding their peace until - whatever - gets revealed this coming week.

With an admitted M-users' bias - I've never expected Leica to reveal much more than a game plan for the R this year. There's only so much a small Co. like Leica can do in 12 months.

And the game plan might even be "kaput". Dr. Kauffman has been VERY cagey about committing to a traditional R-type SLR: "We haven't abandoned the SLR concept, we'll make something for SLR users, consider perhaps something even BIGGER than full-frame" (to paraphrase various comments in LFI and elsewhere in the past year).

I'd presume that whatever gets announced this week - and there does seem to be something out there still - some direct questions will be asked by the audience regarding the R line if Leica does not clarify it themselves at the time.

Either Leica will dodge the subject yet again, or they won't.

I don't think they will. I think they'll do what they did with the DMR, announce it and give a date when it's likely to be introduced. My guess would be that's 12 months off.

With all the product that they've released at Photokina I don't think they've had time to also develop the R.

I see it in the same way. Last Monday they presented the "real" products for the Photochina 2008 (what you can buy from October(?) in a shop) .

Tomorrow they will give an outline the frame parameters on future Products which will appear till Photochina 2010 (new lenes, the fabulous "S2", perhaps something about the dCL )

GMT

The event it is annouced at 19:00 (7pm) MESZ (CEST) = 6pm BST = 5pm GMT/UTC

Dont forget the other two sparkling brand new cameras revealed.

Sorry, sticking a red dot on a Panasonic something or other is hardly ground-breaking. It's actually rather tedious.

What's clear is that if R users are not clear about where that system is headed by the end of this week, they may as well pack up and go home. The R will be dead.

Impossible to disagree with that. I'd hope for a mock up of the R10 and at the very least an unambiguous time scale for production - eg summer next year. If there's no clear statement then as you say the R is as good as dead.

The Leica press party ("VIP event") starts at 7pm on Monday. The invitation says something about "Leicas best kept secret" which is supposed to be presented there and will be the start of a new era for Leica.

This "Future of Memories" tag is weird - it might be something completely unconnected with R and S systems, who knows?

Let's just hope it's not like one of those fireworks parties where the box contents have got a bit damp...

My sentiments exactly, but when its generating nearly as much turnover as the M and R systems combined its easy to understand why it is happening...

Well, the S2 is amazing and then some - great for MF shooters needs. Congrats to the Leica team! I had the work day from hell so it was fun to get home and read all the details of the S2.

So far I think Leica has come through at Photokina - I like the M8 upgrades and firmware as well as the M8.2. I did think they would join the Panasonic Lumix G1 - with a re-badged version but I guess not - and that could be a good thing.

Regards. Terry.

Yes, the new M lenses sound amazing.

Sure, the S2 will be amazing too.

But for now, what's a DMR professional supposed to look forward too? I love working with my DMR. I love making my living, primarily off my DMR, but am so tired of seeing beautiful, really beautiful D3 files and hearing about people's excitement over the new 5D-MkII. WHEN will the R-system get an update? As much as I enjoy my system, I never use it over ISO 200 on a job, and rarely over 400 for myself. There's no way I'll be able to afford an S2 and for my work a rangefinder isn't ideal either. So, I guess I'll keep trudging along with my R8/DMR combo.

Hey Troy! Life could deal you a lot worse fate than having to use your R8/DMR for work... Honestly, I work from 100 to 400 ISO and the files really are beautiful. What do you process yours with? I am, however, getting tennis elbow from putting my Metz 40-MZ2 on the R8/DMR... or am I just getting old... ;)

The S2 appears to be relatively less expensive than what I thought yesterday, but we won't really know for sure until some time from now. I have to say that I have been pre-visualising projects I could us it on... Not a good sign for my pocketbook, but seriously, I expect the R10 will be released within the next 12-15 months (I'm guessing here as to the exact time frame..), that would be a much wiser alternative for sure. Not that I can afford it, but I am seriously tempted by the S2 based on the specs alone, time will tell, at around €10,000 and no more than €15,000 it is a bit of a stretch but still relatively palatable amortized over a number of (hopefully) productive years. I'm not forgetting the lenses either... Enough daydreaming... :D

Cheers,

Yeah, Conrad, I guess you're right. No doubt, the R8-9/DMR is a great combo. I really do enjoy mine (except for when it frigs up like it did today, but that's another thread to come). I guess I've just gotten "new product envy." I DO appreciate Leica because they're not releasing a new camera every 9 months, but I do wish they were a bit more speedy. Oh well, I'm not in Leica for the immediate gratification--just for the great glass and beautiful camera bodies.

Long live the DMR!

Troy
