When I get home I will take a shoot with the current firmware then update and repeat. I doubt there is is anything to better high iso, but perhaps they tried to smooth the noise a little...

It will be hard to tell.

If you can save us some files, we could use the Noise Ninja analyze function to see if the noise score changes. It would have to be the same scene to compare. In other words shoot on a tripod, and try to do the update with the camera on the tripod so you do not loose the framing.

Question - not that I'm being greedy! Any improvement in jpeg sharpening routines? (I.E. can it be set anywhere above "none" without edge effects?) I've downloaded the file - will wait a couple of days just in case an "easter egg" shows up.. 8^)

Duquesne: So auto ISO on SLRs bypasses the slightly inconvenient ISO setting button, and in the M8 it bypasses the much more inconvenient ISO menu. In either case, WE have moved on. Sounds to me like you are hell-bent on beating Leica over the head, regardless of what they do.

From someone who was busy blaming the web site because HE couldn't find the upgrade - while everyone else found it with no problem...

SO PLEASE TELL ME IT IS OKAY TO UPDATE MY CAMERA ONCE IT WAS RETURNED FROM GERMANY? (They might do it for me without asking me).

BECAUSE I CAN NOT GO BACK TO OLD VERSION,,,,,,,

Do I loose anything as 1/8000 speed once upgraded???? If so I do not wish to update!

Please let me know If someone had done extensive test with M8 (FWver 2.00000)

Thank you.:)

Well, how have managed photographers in the past when AUTO ISO feature didn't exist in the old times of film cameras?

I'm sure if, in the past, someone here would have complain about the M8 because of the lack of AUTO ISO, the same people who now love the AUTO ISO function would have kill him in public.

Do you remember the main (only) difference between the Digilux 2 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC1? The Panasonic model had AUTO ISO. Leicaists were saying that AUTO ISO was a heresy. The Leica model was better for that reason...

Personally, I don't mind this feature because it can be disabled. I'm simply surprised by your reactions.

Photographers managed in the past by carrying multiple bodies or backs, often with an assistant to change film for them in order that they could keep up with the shoot. Luckily we don't have to do that anymore because we can change ISO whenever we want. It's called progress my friend; the same reason I'm sending this out into the ether with a click of the mouse, and not writing it on a paper scroll and sending it by horseback. That doesn't stop me appreciating and using film (I carry an MP with me nearly everywhere) but it doesn't make me blind to the benefits of digital either.

Actually the main difference between the Digilux 2 and the Lumix was the price. Apart from the Leica version costing twice as much, they were to all intents and purposes identical. And I never heard anyone say auto ISO was heresy. In fact, many Leica users already enjoy the feature on other cameras.

Surprised by my reactions? Fair enough - no harm in that. But maybe you use your camera in comfortable situations where you have no need of the feature. Looking through this thread it looks like many other people can see the potential it offers quite clearly.

You seem to be of the opinion that using auto ISO somehow implies that someone doesn't have the skills to do it manually. You might look at it the other way round; that for many people it's because they're skilled that they're photographing in situations where they need it.

Don't be afraid.

The update will not change anything concerning shutter or speed.

I am new to M8 (third day, bought used) but also tried some quick and dirty comparisons for high ISO noise before and after FW update.

I took some pictures through my living room onto the dark dining annex. The lights were three floor lamps and one ceiling with "old fashioned" 60 W bulbs. These bulbs imitate the early 20th century electric lighting, they are dim and very warm. There is also a burning fireplace (damn cold September!). We like our lighting really low for a glass of wine and good jazz. So yes, by all standards it's really dark yet contrasty. A,B, C raw originals were given only auto WB and auto development in Lightroom2. The camera AWB chose 3200K, the Lightroom 2800K.

The three pictures A, B, C are same ratio (appx 1/3) crops of the full M8 frame and were taken on a chair+release cable with:

1) Ultron 28mm; 1/8 sec; f2.0; ISO 2500; firmware 1.2.1

2) Ultron 28mm; 1/8 sec; f2.0; ISO 2500; firmware 2.0

3) Summicron pre-asph 50mm; 0.7 sec; f5.6; firmware 2.0

Match A,B,C to 1,2,3 please.

I also found out an intersting phenomenon when shutter was 2 sec or longer. After taking picture the LCD displayed message "Noise reduction" and counter went down 2 sec, 1 sec...Is this new? I could not find anything like that in any literature.

D is the original untouched DNG photo. Guess:before or after fw update?

Disappointed? Well sirs&madams, I offer you truth, the whole truth and only truth...The purpose of the excercise was comparison of noise and not a pulitzer...

I'm really surprised quite M users here find "Amazing" AUTO ISO.

I think ISO and APERTURE have to be set ONLY by the photographer, not by the camera. I don't mind shooting with AUTO SPEED... but I think, personally, I could never use "AUTO ISO" fonction in any camera (including P&S).

My subjects move and I often move with them so i NEED to know what shutter speed i'm shooting.

I can tell you in my two M8 I can only see "1/6s, A, EV 0 and ISO 160" but 35mm, 50mm, 90mm, etc it's not longer visible when I press the "INFO" button while previewing an image.

Check the other menu settings. When you replace the firmware, you need to go back and reset the other settings. For example, I use DNG but new firmware defaulted to jpg fine.

I still have the focal length info from coded lenses with auto detection set.

Unlike my Canon 1D Mark III which I use Auto ISO (when shooting shutter priority -- I want a usable exposure at my chosen shutter speed in dim light -- I've set my limit at ASA 2000), the Auto ISO on the Canon will not work in Manual mode. It keeps the ASA you have chosen.

Now, when I shoot Manual on the M8 and I see that when I choose an aperture and shutter speed, the camera will now choose the ASA (up to my limit chosen) to make that exposure. Nice.

BTW, Auto ISO is relatively a new thing in the pro Canons. It only showed up in the Canon 1D Mark III which was released in Spring 2007.
