M8 Sensor Cleaning Menu Option Doesn't Work

Tried to clean my dirty sensor. Followed the usual instructions, made sure my battery was fresh. Selected sensor cleaning option on rear screen menu, tripped the shutter release and instead of staying open so I could clean the sensor, the shutter fired and the sensor recorded the resulting exposure. Shutter dial was set on "A" as usual. Weird.

Any thoughts on what is causing this? As of this moment, I can't do a thorough cleaning and my sensor needs it.

Dumb question - but after selecting sensor cleaning in the menu did you continued and press set and confirmed "Yes" to inspect sensor?...

That's a completely appropriate question, and thanks for asking. Yes, I did select "Yes" to inspect the sensor, then hit the shutter button and got an normal exposure, but no open shutter needed for the cleaning.

That seems very strange. You would expect either for the warning to display if the battery charge is too low or drops too low during the process.

Another dumb question: is the shutter selector on S vs C? I don't think that it should matter but we're clutching at straws here for what might be causing the shutter to fire but not remain open.

With the camera in cleaning mode, but with the shutter firing, does the camera operate otherwise as it did in this mode in the past until you power off and back on? i.e. does it stay in cleaning mode even though the shutter has fired?

I wonder if you select bulb mode and press the shutter and hold it whether the shutter remains open or not?

You need to select Yes, press set and then you get a menu asking you to press the shutter release button for cleaning. Not quite what you describe. If you do not press set then the cleaning mode is not activated.

You're experiencing what same problem? The one descibed in this thread or the one described in the thread your link points to?

They are not the same problem.

The OP of this thread says his camera will not go into sensor cleaning mode at all, and the thread you link to is about the camera hanging AFTER you hit the shutter release to open the shutter in Sensor Cleaning mode.

I am happy to report that as of this morning, the problem seems to be resolved. I suspect I was moving too fast from step to step and maybe the camera's electronics need an extra second or two to get things rolling and working. Anyway, it works as of this moment so it's time to clean the sensor. Thanks for the contributions and ideas posted here.

Sorry,

mine is hanging after I hit the shutter release. I have to take out the battery to "reset" the camera. Makes me feel like using Windows98 again.

This seems not to be a problem of how fast I click through the menu items.

I had this problem earlier this year. I used my usual cure when encountering strange glitches - reload latest firmware. Problem cured completely.

After selecting sensor clean and pressing enter, a message should appear stating something to the effect that you should press the shutter release to gain access to the sensor and then when complete to turn the camera off in order to release the shutter. Having to remove the battery is basically the same as turning the camera off, although I don't know why your camera didn't bring the prompt up.

Sorry I can't remember the exact wording but hope this helps.

I get that message, but the shutter doesn't open when I hit the shutter. Neither can I turn off the camera or get any reaction from it whatsoever. The only thing that brings it back to life is to take the battery out and in again. Than I can start the camera anew.

  • 1 month later...

Well ... it's a piece of cake.

I've been congratulating myself on NOT having to clean my sensor, but also following all these threads so I'd know what to do.

This weekend, during a nth session for a cake decorating book that I'm doing the shooting for, THERE was a nasty thing to the right of center in the image. Easy to fix: wider lens, position the thing to the left, crop or spot later. You know ... IF you have the 24mm f2.8 lens, the magic lens that Sean shows off so well and that Puts raves about, there's lots of space to the left.

Monday, sent off for the Photographic Solutions Digital Survival Kit -- many thanks to the various threads here. Tonite, used the Sensor View (magnifier with light) to see that damned spot, and then to the stash of Dust-Off for the first try.

The Dust-Off got rid of the thing, and another thing that I could see, but the first thing left a something on the sensor, so, having read the directions carefully, I swabbed the sensor cover, and it's gorgeous.

How simple is this? The newby got it right the first time!

Thanks for all the previous posts and regards to all,

I should mention this, if your camera ever goes in for service. It is just a minor niggle, but it certainly is a fault.

jaapv, I am so glad you dont work in our QA department, I cant imagine how much time I would have to spend explaining myself to my customers because their latest purchase doesnt do what it should.....
