Jamie Roberts Posted August 21, 2008 Share #5 Posted August 21, 2008 Leica has two digital cameras that are great for weddings right now: the M8, which I use all the time, and the DMR, which, while heavier, is still the lightest highest quality back out there. I use it a wee bit less because of it's weight, but I like it's files, that's for sure! Do you mean an autofocus camera?

jaapv Posted August 21, 2008 Share #8 Posted August 21, 2008 Cover an M8 with white leather by camera-leather and there it is... Come to think of it, the Pink M8 we saw a few days ago might be servicable as well, even if it was meant as an "Elvis Presley Lookalike Competition" camera. Tim B Posted August 21, 2008 Share #15 Posted August 21, 2008 I find the M8 great for weddings and where necessary even teaming it up with Metz flash. I have just done a wedding where I used the M8 for lots of informal shots and Phase One P25+ for the formal stuff. It isn't the first time I've used the M8 for this, but the first time I used it in conjuction with the Phase One back (on a Hasselblad). I am deeply impressed with the M8 results in comparison with the P1, within the obvious limitations of course. I even think that maybe the Hassleblad might stay at home next time. If you are asking, "Does this camera cut it," then the answer is a resounding Yes! If you've got cold feet, rent one for a tryout. There are a l-o-t of photogs making their living doing wedding photography with this camera. Speaking for myself, I am taking better pictures than I ever did before I got this beauty. If you're looking for guidance: buy a used one, send it to Solms for a new shutter, and you'll get back a beautiful camera with a CLA and a 1-year warranty. Run, don't walk, to buy this camera. Play a bit before you do your next wedding.

Jamie Roberts Posted August 21, 2008 Share #18 Posted August 21, 2008 @ Stuart--I use three flash types on the DMR, same as the M8...but I'm settling on the newest Nikons, I think. I have a Metz 54c with the Leica module, but while it's a great flash I simply don't like the controls. So I usually use this in manual mode as a "sweetener" at the reception. I use the Canon 580v2, or, even better, the new Nikon SB900 in their Auto mode and they work perfectly with the M8 and DMR (though on the DMR, I have to tape one of the contacts over "behind" the main contact for the flash to fire consistently. The Nikon even signals the camera when the flash is ready on the M8 (but that's the taped over contact on the DMR)! Bounce flash is key to my using any small light source I use Pocket Wizards for remote flashes as well, set to manual or auto. This works well for me to balance the ambient with enough flash to illuminate subjects, um, "in a cave"... Hope that helps! @ Rick--thanks for your kind words on my site. I haven't had time to update it lately, and I have a ton more DMR and M8 stuff to go up there. @ Tim--yes, the M8 and DMR are brilliant for formals if you're used to the Phase. They're not as big, but they don't need to be, and all those Kodak pro sensors have a family resemblance
