PeterP Posted August 27, 2008 Share #101 Posted August 27, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) So in many respects Leica with its 2- and 3-year-old cameras is still ahead of this "advanced" CMOS sensor. I can hardly wait for Photokina. Not quite the conclusion I would draw but still looking forward to Photokina nonetheless . PeterP

Guest DuquesneG Posted August 27, 2008 Share #102 Posted August 27, 2008 aren't you Canon users lucky to be buying replaceable cameras every few months? Glad my M8 is upgradable and will at least have a decent run and give me some value before it is replaced. I have a 5D and an M8 (actually, two). I don't see any need to "upgrade" any of them any time soon, because the image quality is already where I need it to be. My M8 has depreciated almost $1800, which is $200 less than I paid for the 5D in its entirety.

Ecaton Posted September 15, 2008 Share #111 Posted September 15, 2008 Canon wants to sell Canon lenses. If Leica built lenses for the EOS system, then either these lenses would be perceived as superior to Canon’s own offerings, or the other way round. In the first case, this move wouldn’t be in Canon’s best interest, and in the latter case, it wouldn’t be in Leica’s best interest. There is no way both could win. Guest stnami Posted September 17, 2008 Share #112 Posted September 17, 2008 ahhh well so it is only the EOS 5D Mark II with a new 21MP CMOS sensor, a heap of improvements and new features including full 1080p HD movie recording, increased battery capacity and sensor dust reduction. lct Posted September 17, 2008 Share #113 Posted September 17, 2008 Thanks Imants. Looks like my R lenses will find a digital back finally. Remains to see if its IQ is less plasticy than the 5D. carstenw Posted September 17, 2008 Share #116 Posted September 17, 2008 All Canon pics historically need sharpening. A weird quote from the press release: "...the EOS 5D Mark II achieves the highest level of image quality of any EOS Digital SLR released to date." This specifically includes improvements over the 1Ds mark III. I cannot quite understand why Canon would send a shot across the bow of its flagship product like this? I presume that their hand was forced by Sony and Nikon, but still. Maybe there will be a quick release of a 1Ds mark IIIN. Perhaps we will see a rapid price drop on the D700, which would not be a bad thing at all. In my opinion, apart from the lower resolution, the D700 is preferable in every way. I don't need or want movie-shooting ability in a DSLR. I have a camcorder for that.
Ecaton Posted September 17, 2008 Share #117 Posted September 17, 2008 M8.2 USD 6200 - 5D II USD 2600 (rounded). New 5D II plus Zeiss primes looks like a bargain in comparison.
pierovitch Posted September 17, 2008 Share #118 Posted September 17, 2008 If a bargain is a Cosina on a domestic Canon. Better rush off to ####mart before they run out of stock.
wildlightphoto Posted September 17, 2008 Share #119 Posted September 17, 2008 ahhh well so it is only the EOS 5D Mark II with a new 21MP CMOS sensor, a heap of improvements and new features And still only a 14-bit ADC.
sdai Posted September 17, 2008 Share #120 Posted September 17, 2008 And still only a 14-bit ADC. It doesn't really matter, Doug. Pentax claims that their camera uses a 22-bit or 24-bit (can't remember) ADC. LOL
