To all intending particpants for Saturday 2nd August.

John has graciously provided me with a detailed route - the one he would have taken us all on - starting at Belsize Park tube station.

So 2nd August it shall be - shall we say 12 noon as usual?

Hope we can now get a decent turn-out. Can we confirm in this thread please?

If I'm Captain Peacock - what does that make me?

Perhaps more to the point who does that make me?:D Mr Lucas? Certainly not Mr. Humphries.

And no jokes about Mrs Slocombe's .. er ... 'cat' please.

Pete.

For those of us intending to take part on Saturday, and just in case of unforeseen accidents, I am posting here courtesy of John (ejd) a condensed version of the proposed route we shall follow. Seriously late arrivers should be able to catch us up with this.

John's original was very comprehensively annotated with details of the sights to be seen along the way, and I shall bring a copy or indeed several copies with me.

If anyone attending - or even wanting to do this walk some other time wishes a copy - please PM me and I'll email it to them.

I hope we get a good turnout - see you Saturday!

Route for Saturday 2nd Aug 2008

1. Meet at Belsize Park tube station at 12 noon.

2. Walk up Haverstock Hill to Pond Street

3. Go down Pond street to South End Green, (you find there the restored public conveniences made famous by BigLouis)

4. Turn left into East Heath Road, and continuing on, with the Heath on your right, you come to Keats Grove.

5. Go back down Downshire Hill towards the heath

6. Turn left into Willow Road, Going up willow road, you eventually come out at the point where Well Walk runs into Flask Walk – Well walk goes to the right towards the heath.

7. Going to the left on Flask Walk toward the High Street is very picturesque, if slightly twee.

8. If you go right along Well Walk towards the heath and turn left at the corner by the Wells Tavern gastropub up Christchurch Hill, the road takes you up until you come out near the top of Heath Street.

9. At this point the plan would have been to cross Heath Street to the other side, where there are many streets with which John is not so familiar – the Mount Sqaure, Admirals Walk, Windmill Hill, Hampstead Grove etc – but amongst them (signposted) is Fenton House, another Nat Trust property, quite attractive, and also some charming small streets around The Mount which are very high up, and with many nice small houses, and The Holly Bush pub (v close to Mark Norton’s place, apparently).

10. Near Windmill Hill is Mount Vernon where a former hospital – vast thing in French chateau style -- has been converted into posh flats

11. Walking down Holly Walk will take you past a cemetery to Hampstead Parish Church, a fine 18th C red brick buildling and Church Row with nice Georgian Houses. Church Row deposits you back into the middle of Hampstead near the top of Fitzjohn’s Avenue, close to Tesco’s, with the Everyman Cinema just along the road close to the junction of Hampstead High Street and Hampstead underground station. You could then drift down the High Street past Paul’s the Baker.

Pubs

If you turn left from Hampstead High Street into Flask Walk there is The Flask, a pub with lots of space inside, and often not too crowded, and with food. Quite a bit further down Haverstock Hill, past Giraffe and Carluccio’s, turing left down Downshire Hill, near the bottom, there is the Freemason’s Arms, another large pub with more space outside. There’s a gastropub opposite Tesco on Fitzjohn’s Avenue that is spacious and does food. The Holly Bush (right up at the top ) is small and crowded, generally.

Thanks for the excellent itinerary, John and Brian.

Brian,

Might it be a good idea to nominate a pub to finish up in and rough time so that if there are those who can't or don't fancy the stroll they could meet up with us later so that we can turn them green with envy at our adventures? It might also provide a suitable impetus for us to stagger from the first, second, nth pub to collapse in the last. :D

Oh alright, I live in Mount Vernon when I am in London. Sadly, will not be there, off to see Van Morrison in concert. As for pubs, The Holly Bush in Holly Mount, The Wells, The Flask and the Freemasons Arms, great if the sun is shining and you can sit outside.

I note that the weather forecast is looking much better: sunny intervals (but no rain :) ) with a high of 22C. Very pleasant.

Pete.

Latest weather forecast is heavy showers. BBC local weather. Bring a brolly?

A most enjoyable time was had by all! Weather could have been better, but even the occasional sprinkle of rain did not dampen matters.

Thanks to all who came along: George, Robert (all the way from darkest Somerset), Louis, James, Pete, Tim and me.

A big thanks to John for providing the structure for the walk. Alas and inevitably we only managed the first half - but hey! more for the next time we're up that way!

The Flask proved a good venue - quiet (no musak), plenty of space, good food and beer.

Here's to the next time! Photos to follow!
