I had one of these a long time ago and, to this day I regretted parting with it. You will understand my joy when I was speaking Andrew at TCC earlier this week on a lens query and the conversation drifted to loupes and he said he had a virtually unused one in-stock. Needless to say I snapped it up and received it yesterday. It is a wonderful loupe for negs or transparencies with many other uses and I cannot recommend them to highly. Sadly Leitz, in their wisdom have discontinued it but, as I found, they are available as pre owned

I have used one of these for years - simply outstanding.:)

Couldn't agree more. A very good friend of mine (fellow Leica user) has one, and I really covet it. Beautifully built too - a thing to fondle as well as use (ah, where is Phil Kneen?)!

I bought one just after it was relased - 2002? - from the branch of FNAC in Les Halles, Paris - strange how I remember that, I bought my camera bag from the same shop.

I can only asume that Leica ordered a fixed number from their supplier (can't remember who that was, Schneider?) and didn't renew the order when they were all sold - I expect 35mm loupes are a smaller market than they used to be.

No, it was not Schneider, it was company located in Wetzlar. They sell under their own brand; use a somewhat different design on the outside, same inside. Price is different too ;-) They also make other optical instuments like loupes and small microscopes. I can't think of the name at the moment, perhaps something like "Macro"?

Kenneth -

Years ago I bought one, via eBay and thought it was superb. However, I ended up using it so little (especially after moving first towards, and then to digital) that I sold it on eBay. It was beautiful and exquisitely built.

They go for ridiculous prices on eBay now...$300 - $400.

If you find one in decent shape at a good price, snap it up quick.

Ridiculous price? It pales in compairson to the $16,000US limited edition Noctilux.

I'm just sayin'...

I have a MacroMax 5x, too, since 20+ years, purchased at the old Ken Hansen in NYC from Ray Ng (now co-owner of PhotoHabitat in NYC). A year or so ago on ebay I picked up a second film holder.

My is labelled EMO, Wetzlar, West Germany.

That reminds me, I bought a 2,8/90mm Elmarit-R at the very same place. A dissapointing performer, I don't think I've taken a single really sharp picture with it. Should have sent it to Leica right away of course on warranty, but these lenses sometimes take time to figure out. Now it rests peacefully on display on a R3 body in my vitrine.

As for loupes, let me point out that Schneider makes an excellent 4x version (of which I have two) with a wide field of view at a sensible price.
