I was in NYC a few weeks ago and only took the 21 mm lens for the M8. It was Mother's Day weekend and the leaves in the trees had just popped out providing an airy light green look to everything. The upper west side looked a lot like Paris that day.

The only hassle is that all of Manhatten is under construction or rennovation. The buildings ae covered in scaffolding which ruins most shots. Focus on Central Park or the interiors of places like Grand Central Terminal and you will have fun.

If you inlcude something of interest in the foreground the 21 mm lens is great for cityscapes, in my opinion.

ps. the bbq place in brooklyn that i suggested has seating at picnic tables and no waiter service, so you never really eat alone, new yorkers are actually quite friendly so you will probably strike up a conversation with whom ever sits at the table with you.

apart from that, the city is well, the city, there is tons of stuff happening all over the place. there is a nice place called "shake shack" in the park just off 23rd street near the flat iron building. you can get a burger and beer there.

also, downtown is B&H dairy on 2nd avenue between 7&8streets, its an old style kosher dairy lunchonette, inexpensive and good food.

and around the corner from there on 10th streets is a japanese ramen shop called Rai Rai Ken, its small and fairly inexpensive (but not as cheap as B&H), on a hot day their cold noodles are great.

you probably notice that most of what i know is food related, sorry about that, but a guy's got to eat and like i said, there is plenty of stuff going on that you will see between the meals.

also, further east, is Life Cafe (from the show Rent) and they still have their breakfast special for $3.40 2eggs, rice&beans or homefries and coffee. Thats on 10th street at the corner of Avenue B across from Tompkins Square Park, there are plenty of "crustys" to photograph there (*crustys are the kids who used to be called squatters).

you should also check out the west side piers in the west village. beautiful views at sunset.

and finally, you can take the staten island ferry for free and go right by the statue of liberty to get your photos of it. you might want to bring a book or newspaper as you may have to wait a few minutes to get the ferry back to nyc.

have a great time here in nyc.

Now, if I started recommending places to shoot in NY, my fingers would fall off from typing them all.

Let me start off first by recommending BBQ places in NY. NYer's like their BBQ, and this past weekend was the Big Apple BBQ where thousands showed up to try BBQ from all over the country. Good BBQ places in Manhattan are Hill Country, Daisy Mae's, Blue Smoke, Dinosaur BBQ, and R.U.B. (in no particular order).

Besides taking photographs of BBQ, here are is brief list of places and areas that I love to shoot (again in no particular order):

- The Cloisters

- Grand Central Terminal

- Metroplitan Library

- Farmer's Market in Union Square

- West Village

- East Village/Lower East Side/Nolita/Alphabet City

The "normal" places to shoot like Times Square, Empire State Building, Central Park, Chinatown are all nice and good, but a little overdone.

Best thing to do is when you get to NY, pick up Time Out New York Magazine which lists events that are happening in NY for that week. Lists all Broadway, off-broadway, and off-off-broadways shows, movies, sports events, gallery showings, exhibits, restaurant reviews, and everything else you want to know when your in town.

And I'll answer before its asked... don't worry about security. Make sure your Leica is in your hands all the time, odd things in NY seem to happen all the time and you want to make sure your ready to capture it at any second.

Oh, and as for lens recommendations, I'd bring all except the telephoto. I use a 21mm and a 35mm but find I usually stick with my 21mm during the day.

The one place I always take friends that are visiting is on a walk on The Brooklyn Bridge. There is a boardwalk that spans the bridge ... a great view of The City and just a great way to see the bridge.

Enjoy the city !

Photo Village fan here as well.....but a trip to B + H is a must for any photographer...its Disney World for shooters.

Do the gutsy thing, take the 21 only. I have done that on more than one occasion. it will be the most fun you ever had with this great lens. And New York is the perfect place to try something this radical.

The 21 is nothing "radical" on a M8 but a 28 equivalent.
