If you could have just 1 camera and 1 lens, what would they be?

As we all ponder the acquisition of yet another camera (in my case the M8) to our already sufficient collection, I wonder what the expert forum would pick if they could only own 1 camera and 1 lens (including cameras no longer owned). As I reflect on my humble history including a Ricoh Singlex TLS (sold), Nikon F3 (sold), and now a Leica M6 (with Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4) and Leica D-Lux 2, I would have to pick (I'm somewhat embarrassed to say) the D-Lux 2 given its digital ability with immediate gratification & total processing control, Leica glass, ease of portability, built-in flash, zoom lens, & uncanny results. Thus I wonder if I should pursue the M8.

MP or M6 (0.72) and 50mm Summilux ASPH. Maybe not the most versatile outfit, but I always get my best pictures with the 50mm focal length. I always view photography as having to do with the close view and 90% of my subjects are people. I've often thought of selling everything but one body and this lens. And the new ASPH Summilux is nothing less then outstanding in either, in my mind now, color or B&W. The crispness of this lens for B&W has grown on me and now I like it very much. I've even considered adding the 75mm Summicron (after selling a few pieces) because I understand it too has a similar optical excellence. Something you can really seen with the naked eye. I only shoot B&W, but if I shot color I would probably gravitate toward some digital camera. M8?

At present, I'd keep what I take my most and best shots with: DMR and 100 macro.

100mm seems to be very natural for me. Zooms seem like they'd be too distracting, but the only ones I've used were motorized.

But, I think I'm going to go for an M8. I'm really looking forward to the handiness, unobtrusiveness, quick focus in low light, large screen instant feedback, and a 50mm or 35mm may become my main tool. I can see this becoming my constant, and experimental companion where the DMR is not. I can see it opening up the way and type of shooting I do.

Best,

Mitchell

Sean,

Excuse my ignorance. What are CV Ultron lenses?

Nice to hear that the only one of us with experience with the M8 wants it as his only camera.

Mitchell

Hi Mitchell,

CV is Cosina Voigtlander. They make a 28/1.9 lens that I like even better than the 28/2.0 Summicron (prefer the contrast characteristics of the former). The new Leica 28/2.8 is great too but the rules of this game are only one camera/one lens so I would want a faster lens than 2.8.

And, yes, the same thought occured to me. But it would indeed be the M8.

If I could have just one camera and four lenses, it would be the M8 plus:

Leica 24/2.8

CV 28/1.9

Leica 35/1.4 Asph.

Leica 50/1.4 Asph.

Now, if Leica ends up making the two lenses I suggested to them (24/2.0 and 28/1.4) those would have to take precedence on the list.

Cheers,

Sean

For my one and only body I'm torn between the R8/DMR for it's image quality especially compared with film at high ISO, and the simplicity, low maintenance and incomparable viewfinder of the SL2.

My one and only lens is a simple choice: 280 f/4 APO

Hi Sean, would you care to elaborate a little on this? I only ask because I have the same CV lens and with the M8 on the near horizon I'm begining to think about whether to keep this or perhaps replace it with the 28mm Summicron after I've got the M8.
