1.) Option for unique file names (yyyy/mm/dd/nr, which means: year/month/day/number on that special day)

2.) Make it as weatherproof as possible

3.) Silent mode (no re-cocking until the shutter button is released)

4.) Smaller charger

Nikon D3 level high ISO performance

...

Focussing based on sensing the actual image, closed loop as Bob puts it

Are these two features really compatible? Can a focus algorithm that analyses image pixels match the rangefinder for speed and accuracy in really bad light? (ISO cranked up to 6400 and the shutter speed down to 1/15) Or will it be necessary to fit a specialised focus sensor and a mirror for it ... or have the focus sensing as a supplement to the RF rather than a replacement?

Also, with no automatic diaphragms the focus system will have to work at all apertures from f/1 down to f/22 or so, which I guess could be a challenge.

Or have all these problems been solved?

16 Mb sensor will be a must-have within 4 years on the market

Sensor or firmware including UV/IR sensitivity

100 ISO for DNG format should be a real satisfaction, even lower, if possible. But the results delivered by the actual sensor on M8 are already excellent...

SDHC !

Enhanced buffer (street photo, same as any historical Leica)

Framelines in the viewfinder according to the real framing, with any lens !

Silence when shooting

An easier way to take off the card from the camera, or easier plugging to data machine.

A battery that affords stronger weather conditions

Braketing, easy to choose in the menu, like under or overexposure, not any more button... but it's not a priority, imho

Provide an additional convex (round) shutter release button with the camera, this is such a low cost, but really much a need for certain fingers or fast shooting conditions...

I think that Leica couls provide (or sell) a "so said" cardreader with an expensive camera.

At least, I am quite ready to pay a bit more if the firmware is "almost" complete when then camera is launched on the market, and doesn't need any upgrade every 4 months.

Hi guys,

I'm probably going to get toasted on the forum for saying this, I would love a manual shutter re-cock lever (much like the Epson RD1). If you want motor drive, you can add it on, like on the M6.

Apart from that, better noise control at higher ISO's is my main complaint.

Andreas

I wouldn't mind that at all. They could sell a motor separately, similar to the current Motor-M...

Dual range viewfinder magnification

Focussing based on sensing the actual image, closed loop as Bob puts it

Electronic framelines (accurate, single, auxiliary backlight)

Mark, I have noticed that you criticize a lot the rangefinder opto-mechanical system, that is the foundation of an M. Which is the problem of the system? It's not working as intended (that is with lenses upto 90mm)? I am asking this, because I don't have a 90lens to test...

1. better high ISO (as good as 5D or 1DIII)

2. no excess IR sensitivity issue

3. longer battery life (as good as 5D or 1DIII)

4. no removable baseplate (card door like other cameras)

5. quiet shutter

6. SDHC and/or compact flash

7. full frame

Mark, I have noticed that you criticize a lot the rangefinder opto-mechanical system, that is the foundation of an M. Which is the problem of the system? It's not working as intended (that is with lenses upto 90mm)? I am asking this, because I don't have a 90lens to test...

We've covered this a lot but a variety of factors make focussing on the M8 much more critical than it was on film cameras and certainly on the earliest cameras - more than 50 years ago - which first used the system. Faster lenses. Higher resolution lenses. Longer Lenses. Close focus lenses. Thicker imaging layer in the M8. All of them make focussing more difficult and stretch the capabilibilities of the rangefinder to the limit so that focussing a lens like the APO 90/2 ASPH on an M8 is tough to do reliably.

The problem comes from the fact that the feedback to the user - whether the focus is correct or not - is from a system which does not sense focus directly but which relies on critical adjustment in the camera and each lens to make it work. Even then, it only has a certain tolerance or repeatability which in the worst case can swamp the accuracy required. You're in trouble with any system if the setting accuracy required is of the same order as the tolerance it works to. You really want the tolerance to be at least an order of magnitude better.

I call this "focus by proxy", meaning there's a separate system for judging focus from the one which is providing it and the whole thing only works when the two are working properly. Bob used the term of "closing the loop", so that focus feedback to the user in the viewfinder is based on analysis of the image the lens is projecting onto the sensor.

I certainly admire and respect people who use the M8 professionally because they are obviously confident they can nail focus reliabily. I am not so; I get too many images which, despite my best efforts (and having my eyes tested), are oh-so-close to what I intended.

Fortunately, Mr. Putts has provided us with a very nice article regarding rangefinders:

Accuracy is some 1.5% up to 10m and raises after that, provided you aim @ thin lines (vernier acuity). Therefore, provided that lens used are accurately set (no focusing errors), all that's needed is actually the correlation of %error with horizontal movement of the lens for focusing, and how this is affected for different types of lenses. Unfortunately this correlation is not given by this excellent article from Putts.

I am very happy with how this simple optic system works, and I am almost certain that 50 years of heritage guarantee that the system works great with lenses upto 90mm as Leica suggests, but I would really like to know what it actually means to operate within this error and how this is related to output.

I will begin a new post about this to avoid this thread's hijacking though, so we can continue this conversation...

I don't want a FF, my lens set is based on the crop factor :D

But yes, we do need a new sensor, a 2 years old sensor is out-dated in digital. Better DR would be great

-SDHC would be great

-Faster write speed would be great

-preview while the picture is still in the buffer would be great

-Less noise would be great

-lower Iso's would be great

-faster wake-up time in stand-by mode would be great

-lower upgrade prices for those who recently bought the M8

and being able to deliver a new &^$^&* sunshade for my elmarit 28/2.8 in a reasonable time. I waiting for 5 %$^ months now!!!

FF

ISO 6400 NO noise

ISO expandable as with Nikon D3

Auto ISO as good as Nikon D3

SDHC

built in IR filter

better ergonomic body (built in grip)

better and more accurate AWB

So a D3 that you can stick M glass on? :D

I am also a Nikon D3 user. It's a truly fantastic camera and M8 would benefit from these updates:

#1: Low noise at ASA 6400, support ISO 25600 (i.e., Match that of D3)

#2: Auto ISO, with the ability to specify lowest tolerable shutter speed to ensure sharpness

#3: something similar to the D3's Dynamic D-Lighting where dynamic range can be increased in strongly back-lit situations

#4: FF is going to be difficult, but I would love to recover the view-angle and depth-of-field relationship of the traditional 35mm format.
