Some News (or Rumor) About R10

Now that the Sony samples are out, I'm not thinking this is real competition for Leica. Low dynamic range, real noisy. Sure it has some nice features but looking at the samples - well... you all should have a look and decide for yourselves.

I remember how little was said about the firmware upgrade for the DMR and how much noise there was here on the forums about it. They did say they were working on it, and they delivered a useful upgrade but in the mean time there was ton of speculation about whether they had dropped it just as there is now about possible R10's. Less than a week to go....

There will always be the odd rogue exception of course but the DMR has generally proved to be an extremely reliable piece of camera engineering producing superb 16 bit colour files. I believe that this may have given Leica a bit of a headache in fact, how do you improve on such a good product?

Some experienced DMR users have already discovered that the only way forward if they wish to improve file quality is to move on to MF with 16 bit digital backs........most preferring one with another Kodak sensor such as Phase One on a Mamiya 6x4.5 body.

Perhaps Leica have also made this deduction aided by their more recently announced co-operation with Jenoptic/Sinar?

Who knows really, only Leica and they have the opportunity to tell us in their press announcement on 15th September.

Damn it, that's the day I leave for the States! Anyone know the time of their announcement as if it is before 11.30 hrs (UK) 12.30 hrs (Germany) I could probably pick it up before I leave?

18 months to be exact.

Leica probably figured it was all too late because almost all R users have jumped ship.

How many folks were posting into these "R10" threads? You, Doug, Conrad, Andy and I, that's 5 ... adding a second hand, LCT, Steve, Rob, Jamie, that's probably all.

I feel left out :(

I have the same problem (only not leaving to US, but travelling through our "near east") and asked this question in the german part before (where more Leica afficinados are sneakung around) = no answer.

What link ... you just surf to dpreview.com. ;)

The vast majority of DPR's Leica are P/S people. I've found very little technical knowledge there but a lot of Class envy about people who use M8's.

Alan, until you try the DMR you have no clue how good small-format image quality can be.

It doesn't matter how good the quality is if the camera doesn't offer the lenses and features I need. The 28mm PC lens and the 1.3x factor is not very wide. A 15mm lens is only equal to a 20mm, no IS, no AF, etc. And I'm looking forward to my next camera having live view. I shoot tethered to a computer a lot and often place the camera where I can't see through the viewfinder.

Funny how you reference the past to refuse the possibility that something current can be better than Canon lenses on a 5D.

I certainly do not refuse that possiility. I said that many of todays cameras are good enough for what most photographers need. I also said that when I feel I need better quality (rarely,) I go for vastly more quality by stitching several images. Trying to decide if one particular 35mm camera or lens is a little better than another is not that important to me because my current gear has served me well.

Alan, those who own and use both the DMR and the 5D unanimously prefer the DMR's image quality by a wide margin, not just a little bit. Stiching several exposures together will give you more data points to work with (and can be done with the DMR as well) but it doesn't improve the quality of the data points. That's what the DMR's advantage is: greater bit depth, dynamic range, gradation, and color quality. Of course with the DMR you can't use those wonderful Canon L wides

The suggestion that a 5D with R lens mount could be a suitable replacement for the DMR is not something I'd be remotely interested in.

Even though I haven't been posting anything for months and months, I still check the forum almost every day, waiting for some real news about a DSLR by Leica, whatever be the name.

Frustration and disppointment are still growing in my mind, and when I read about Andreas' Leica Survey, I answered very negatively, with a personal mail to Andreas about the way Mr Kaufmann treats his trustful customers. Of course, Andreas did not reply, which seems now to be the usual way at Leica.

But I still am part of the people who loved their DMR (I still miss my stolen one), and with the help of dear friends, I have rebuilt my R lenses collection, waiting for a new really digital body. So I am very afraid by the idea of Leica changing its bayonet mount and the possibility of no retro-compatibility of a new body with the lenses I possess now... I am using these lenses on a Canon 450D, but the thrill is not there.

These are the reasons for which I have been waiting, in silence... I really wish I could be wrong...

Gérard
