I received an adapter that is supposed to give auto focus confirmation from the happy folks in Hong Kong. I am not getting autofocus confirmation. Is there a setting on the 5D I should be using? Any tips for this? Thanks

As far as I know focus confirmation should work regardless of the setting. Maybe you received a defective adapter. The EXIF should have information on what lens the camera thinks it has mounted. If you don't see it, either the contacts are lined up incorrectly or the chip is defective. Either way you should return it. Make sure the focus confirmation light comes on with a Canon lens to make sure that the light works.

Try to push up and fix the small cam inside Canon body, but don't use paper for fixing as what I did. Please refer to the illustration.

There are different adapters on the market. Some (like probably yours) cannot give AF-confirm with 5D and 1-Series DSLRs without this little fix (they work without fix with the "small" DSLRs like 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 300D, 400D).

I got one from a dealer which works with AF-confirm WITHOUT any fixes on my 5D. The way it should to be :D

Thanks all. I got it to work. Took it off and put it back on. Now I get confirmation and the exif tells me it is an 80mm 1.4. Now I just need to get the focusing down. Depth of field is really narrow on the 5D. This think is a gem. Frank

I have a very slow i-net-connection at the moment, but try or search for Enjoyyourcamera.com - Ihr Versandhaus für Profi-Fotozubehör and ask them for the adapter they sent me (they might remember my name).

If you can wait a little bit, i can give you some more feedback how accurate it works later. Did the "happy easter" -bunny-shot with the wide open Apo-Macro-Elmarit 100 and EOS 5D today.

Any link to this adapter Ronald?

I bought a focus-confirm adapter and was unhappy with it. I did some research with the help of Mr Google and found that generically they only work with the lens at max aperture and may or may not work with zooms. Mine will not work with either of my two Leica zooms; nor will it work with my 400mm Telyt. It will not work with my 2x apo extender fitted to any lens. Apart from that, it's fine! Mine came via ebay from big_is in Hong Kong (who provided a very fast service).

It may depend on the camera you are mounting it to. Only the 1D series cameras have AF sensors sensitive enough to focus lenses slower than f5.6. On the Canon consumer level cameras, though not related to your problem directly, they will disable AF if a tele-converter is used and the combination of lens/converter is slower than f5.6.

On all the Canon cameras, the center point is the most sensitive, so you may try activating only the center point if that is possible with the focus confirm adapter fitted.

Robert, yes that's possible. As you say the limitation lies with the camera not the adaptor.

I realized after posting that he may have also been trying to focus with the lens stopped down to the working aperture. There is a very good chance that the stopped down working aperture will be smaller than the f5.6 the consumer level Canons require to have enough light on the sensors to focus.

My Leica on Canon days go back before the focus confirm adapters and were always on the 1 series bodies, both film and digital.

I had a Haoda focus-confirm adapter with a 50 Summicron on a 5D. I believe it is considered a leading brand. But it would not confirm at apertures smaller that 5.6. I'm not sure if this is true generally, but Haoda acknowledged that was correct for their adapter.

Hi Frank I have seen and used a few of these may I recommend

Tago Tech in Singapore. I use this one it will display F1.4 the exposure reading is taken once stopped down.

I think this one is the right one for you as it is the best made one out there ( better chip support ) also it comes with a Canon end cap.

I use mainly the 21-35 on a 40D the adaptor works on almost all of the EOS. just google and look at the 72 different ones at the site.

Thanks guys. I am having a little trouble focusing but I think it is lack of experience with manual. It have been a long time since I used manual focus anything. What about screens? I have the Ee-S on order. Does it work fine when you are using autofocus or is just for manual focusing? Do I need trade out the screen to use my autofocus lenses? Frank

I use an Ee-S. It does help somewhat, but not significantly. No, you won't need to switch screens to go back to autofocus. Autofocus works fine with the Ee-S.

There are third party screens that are considered much better. BrightScreen, Katz Eye, Haoda are some of the leaders. They are more expensive than Canon's, but might be worth a look. -- John

Well, thanks Ronald. I first bought the Novoflex adaptor, but a couple of days later got the one you recommended from "Enjoy Your Camera" - good name! It arrived yesterday, and so far I'm quite pleased. Yes, it worked out of the box, even though their own instructions on the product's site say that we ought to supress the little pin on the 5D.

I'm very excited to use my just-acquired pre-owned 80 f/1.4 for some portraits.

I purchased one of the autofocus confirm adapters. I was not getting shots in focus when the beep occurred. Thought is was me and a large aperture. More practice. Then I installed the Ee-S screen on the 5D. Now I see when things are in focus. The problem is when I get autofocus confirm with the adapter, the beep and associated highlighted focus point occurs past the point of focus when turning the focus ring to the left. The confirm is not accurate by any standard. Anybody experiencing this? Using an 80mm f/1.4 Leica R. Frank

Frank, probably no help, but I fitted a Brightscreen to my 5D and found that the using the focussing screen gave me in focus shots. So if you're happy with the EF-S screen I'd stick to that since the AF confirmation isn't giving you the results you want.

I've no idea if some AF adaptors are better than others - I'd have though from an AF point of view they were all much or a muchness.
