The M8 puzzle game

Does anyone teach me the translation of 'Detection Objective' (in French).

And it says 'Active'.

I am very much concerned about the meaning of it, since there's a small round-shaped glass hole located in the front (top left of the Leica logo mark).

if I were to imagine, Object Detection 'Active' & glass whole, this naturally leads me to think about a sort of focus assistance (DFI = Digital Focus Indicator) or something else.

My guess is that they now regret the Perpignan thing - very difficult to keep things under-wraps after something like that.

I'm not sure Leica will be too concerned. As far as I can tell nothing written so far has been negative about the M8. The present leaks have only served to create a further buzz in anticipation of the official launch on Friday.

" - but only Sean and the other folks who have worked with the camera for more than "40 minutes" can tell us whether that ISO 2500 is usable. "

Wonder how long Luminous Landscape, Ken Rockwell and Erwin had with the M8 ?? Presume these open web sites will get the most traffic and become more influential as a consequence.

Puts and Reichmann perhaps, but I can't see Leica's PR people providing Rockwell with a pre-release M8 - he's always been far too hostile about Leica. Personally, I will prefer to read what seasoned (and more accomplished) M users like Jonathan Eastland will have to say about the M8. Unless the word gets out that the M8 is a total dog (something I don't expect to happen), the M8 seems destined to be a total success for Leica, regardless of what the internet 'gurus' have to say about it.

There's little doubt that this is going to be massive for Leica. Hermes was right to put in the investment needed for this project. The company could return to its position at the top of the pile very quickly.

Information & reviews on the internet will be very influential. over on photo.net you can see the change in opinions as the non-digi users learn about the product. I'm more interested in reviews than the Leica technical specs which I'll absorp by 10:00am tomorrow. It'll take weeks to read up on the reviews and opinions.

This is a non-event for the majority of photographers. Most of the DSLR users I know are unaware of the launch, or don't care about it. Their interest may well change as the word spreads.

What Sean and Sebastian et al have to say is key in my decision making as I will order before I can play with one. Main concern is that the reviewers samples were pre-production units and will raise unnecessary criticisms. Hope Leica addresses this in their launch material.

The pre-release video confirms so much about the shape and size etc. Viewfinder is next on the list and obviously file characteristics.

Leica did a terrific job of keeping this under wraps till this week. The NDA must have been very thorough to contain international field testing and dealer preparation.

I don't quite catch the paparazzi thing and leakage story.

The Perpignan meeting has been organized by Leica reps allowing people to take pictures and the French blog to be published right now hasn't it?

The man on the video says 'for your blog' and he just did'nt want to reveal the price of the M8 before 15th September.

The only leaks i'm aware of have been disclosed by Jorge Torralba 2 weeks ago.

BTW i won my bet, K.P., as Jorge's pics were true weren't they?

LL will have a very concise overview of some new Leica products that was written by me. Michael, of course, is respecting the September 15 date.

Cheers,

Sean

Lust gone wild! Blood in the water! Gold fever!

I'm sold. I can't wait to have the damn thing in my hands. I'm on a list, but far down. I have no idea how long it will take to get one.

I have and love the DMR, but I think the M8 may well become my work horse. For a long time I've thought I should get a digicam to always have with me, but I could never pull the trigger on all the compromises involved.

But, an M8 with that big screen for instant feedback, with the M feel, size and unobtrusiveness will lead my shooting to much greater spontanaity and experimentation. I think it will really open things up.

Note: DNG with JPEG probably means that storage/viewers like the Epson 4000 will work with the M8.

Best,

Mitchell

The bottom plate issue does not seem like a bad one. Releasing the plate still seems like a fast process. Although it is a part in your hand to deal with . maybe leica thought in the design of a door that it would be to fragile , also possible the only way to get the tripod centered. The one interesting thing is besides the 1/8000 shutter there still resides the B function. On the DMR folks this does not work but it does have 8 second and 16 seconds and also a flash sync setting. now will the M on B actually be be BULB as we know it or is there a 24 second cutoff or some number like that.

That could be very true indeed , reason i was surprised to see it. There is also software issues that this will solve. Plus you can make a instant contact sheet to send off electronically to a client before getting into the raw processing. This is a welcome change. Also there are just some jobs that need images on the spot, of course this will eat up a card faster but my bet is the M does support 4gb cards . Did anyone notice a PC outlet in all of this. This maybe old hat with pocket Wizards and such now
