Advertisement Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Hi Riccis, Take a look here Leica M8 - Would you buy it now?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pemayeux Posted March 1, 2008 Share #22 Posted March 1, 2008 I traded my R4 for a M6 in 1998 (or 96?) and never looked back. For a small format camera I love the rangefinder. I've since sold that M6 for a MP when it was introduced and added a M6 black paint .85 viewfinder. I love them all. Then comes digital. I tried the Digilux 1. Kept it for six months until the Digilux 2 came out. Never really quite happy with either. Then the Canon 5D came out. I sold the D2 and bought it. It was "ok", much better than the previous, but it was still digital. Then the M8 came out - I got mine Jan 10 of last year. After the first eight months - I sold the 5D due to lack of use and since then I've only run maybe a dozen rolls of film through my film Ms. The M8 though digital is, to me, the perfect interface; the perfect transition. I still prefer the projected Kodachrome slide, but for day to day use the M8 comes close enough. I carry it with me everywhere I go. Concerning problems and such -especially much of the banter your might read on the internet - I put it all in the bullshit category - there may be a few quirks, but if you like digital and you like rangefinders - they are aren't worth worrying about. As far as lenses go - people may say if you liked 35 on film go with 28 on the M8. I've got both - I still go 35 on the M8 and the films. So there you are - I suppose my answer would be - yes. If I lost my M8 tomorrow, I'd promptly purchase another.
Chuckcars Posted March 1, 2008 Share #23 Posted March 1, 2008 No way would I consider parting with my M8. I just returned from a two week trip in the western USA. My Hasselblad got no use. Am actually wondering why I bring the blad sometimes. Never look back on the purchase of an M8. Now, what to do when I send it in for upgrade at the end of year. gtmerideth Posted March 1, 2008 Share #25 Posted March 1, 2008 Of course my answer is yes. But more importantly, JumpStart, you are such a voice of reason. I appreciate your views and comments. g.
Guest Essemmlee Posted March 1, 2008 Share #26 Posted March 1, 2008 Did you se the number of entries for the Leica one day bit of fun yesterday? Many of those pix were taken by well satisfied M8 users. The M8 continues to provide fantastic results pic after pic. I'd buy another one in a flash. razerx Posted March 1, 2008 Share #27 Posted March 1, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) My M8 arrived with a defect that had to be fixed at Solms and that was a 3 month wait. Getting lenses coded also took at least 3 months. Now since buying it back in 11/07 I finally took it out for a two day shoot and after seeing the photos all the bad memories have vanished. It is THAT brilliant (the camera not my skills). The 24mm Elmarit asph seems to be a perfect match for me. I would buy it again and will actually get a back up soon. patashnik Posted March 1, 2008 Author Share #28 Posted March 1, 2008 Thank you all, i was hoping for some reassurance, but you have overwhelmed me! I will definiately get a 28mm, probably the Voigtländer 28mm Ultron to start off. I can't wait!
Guest Cordell Posted March 1, 2008 Share #29 Posted March 1, 2008 I just bought it.3200 $ brand new (special promo). $3200? USD? Brand new? Special Promo, that's the understatement of the millenium. Where oh where did you get one for that price? I'd hope someone would kick me in the nuts if I was about to buy an M8 for $5500, but for $3200, hell I'll buy one today, and I already have two. I've had both my M8's shutters jam and spend 2 months in Germany, plus most of the other acknowledged glitches and problems--oh, sorry, I meant design features It's a nice camera and the only one of it's kind, but I've owned several brands of digital over the years and never, ever had this many problems to deal with or had any repair take that long. Am I sorry I bought my M8's? Now that they seem to be working properly (knock wood), not really, but there were moments when I did regret it. Would I buy an M8 today, at this point in time, at its current price? No way.
gIzzE Posted March 1, 2008 Share #30 Posted March 1, 2008 I just bought it.3200 $ brand new (special promo). Delighted, no regret at all. Will use also its IR capability for easy IR photography. Used it with a Noctilux, a Summilux 35 and a 21 ASPH none with coding : no problems so far. Where from??!! Please share, I will order now.

Guest Robert Belasario Posted March 1, 2008 Share #32 Posted March 1, 2008 Knowing what I know now.... having to have sent the M8 back twice within a 12 month period, I would carefully reconsider, the outcome might be that I would.... but the odds would be that I wouldn't although I like it, but just looking at the pure economics of it all as well as the fact that out of 12 months ownership I have just been able to use for 8 months due to the return to Solms ...... Difficult descision .... It's like asking if you would marry your wife again after 25 years... some would say yes and others would shout no-way (I wouldn't know I'v only been married for 6 years now and I still wouldn't trade my wife in for an M8.... but that wasn't the question now was it :-) )

photolandscape Posted March 1, 2008 Share #34 Posted March 1, 2008 Bottom line: it is so easy to use, so unobtrusive, so light and easy to handle, and, best of all, produces a level of image quality so far superior to any Canon or Nikon or any other film or digital camera I've used or owned. The good far outweighs the issues that we tend to focus on in this forum. I'd do it in a heartbeat.
luigi bertolotti Posted March 1, 2008 Share #35 Posted March 1, 2008 Thank you all, i was hoping for some reassurance, but you have overwhelmed me! I will definiately get a 28mm, probably the Voigtländer 28mm Ultron to start off. I can't wait! We are the best Leica salespeople... anyway, I agree completely... you'll no regret your choice; correct the choice of a CV 28 to start... right focal, right price, there is time to think of Leica lenses after... Just a purist advice ... pity to have a Leica and not a single Leica lens... why not to find a honest Elmar 50 ? It's cheap and easily available... it's a 50...very different from 28... it's the paradigm of old Leitz lenses... and is enjoyable on M8, even is it's a little difficult to address the UVIR filter issue... but can forget it and use it mainly in B & W... its natural domain onto a M8. wilfredo Posted March 1, 2008 Share #36 Posted March 1, 2008 I'm not in the upper income bracket but I have no regrets. With the recent WB fix, life is even better than before. I don't have anything wider than a 35mm, so coding is really a non-issue for me. Using filters, again it is really a non issue. I've always used filters on all my lenses. Even after a year I'm still blown away by the image resolution and B&W capabilities of the M8. Here's something I did just this week: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/people/47027-fading-memories-series.html BTW, I also have a Canon 5D and Canon G9. I like these cameras and there are times when a DSLR is more handy, but the M8 remains my favorite, and my pictures from the M8 remain my most treasured. Well, I have one: The 35mm Summicron ASPH. I did own the 50mm Summicron (latest version) as well, but got rid of that after owning the Planar for a while. There is just something about the Zeiss that I really love!
