Advertisement Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Hi sean_reid, Take a look here Sean's review of the Apple Mac Pro is very interesting. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sean_reid Posted February 19, 2008 Share #42  Posted February 19, 2008 Even cheaper is Cyberduck | FTP for Mac OS X. It's free  I'll try that one too then, thanks.  Cheers,  Sean
sean_reid Posted February 19, 2008 Share #43 Â Posted February 19, 2008 These are the things that usually seem to work faster on a PC (especially RAW conversion). Mac (which I've used for 20 years) has, for me, always been about the overall computing experience. Â Hi Ian, Â I haven't compared apples to apples (no pun intended) but the Mac Pro has been flying on RAW conversions, about 1.5 seconds per with some files. I don't how fast an equivalent PC would be because my previous computer wasn't in the same league. Â Cheers, Â Sean
Michael-IIIf Posted February 19, 2008 Share #44 Â Posted February 19, 2008 That's not the thrust or the point of the article at all. Â That might not have been the original poster's intention, it might not even be there yet, but just give it time. Â
wparsonsgisnet Posted February 19, 2008 Author Share #45 Â Posted February 19, 2008 The original posters intention was three-fold: Â 1. To announce to the world (small 'w') that ReidReviews had, again, published a review that was at once the usual coherent, cogent, and informative presentation -- and about a Mac conversion. 2. To note that this publishing source had again incited my particular interest. 3. To elicit from Sean information about his use of a windoze enabler within the MacPro OS. Â As step 2 is not so important to others, I should say that points 1 and 3 were met admirably. So, thanks to Sean for continuing to publish so many articles that interest so many different photographers. Â Regards to all,
35photo Posted February 19, 2008 Share #46  Posted February 19, 2008 Bill:I don't think Imageprint runs on a mac OS; dang it. you would have to run the virtual PC for that  ImagePrint does run on the Mac. Smallcreep Posted February 19, 2008 Share #47 Â Posted February 19, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I prefer to use my Macbook tp print photos because of the simple way I can change colour profiles - but using excel or word is painful whether native Mac versions or using windows versions through parallels. Â Â Why not try the Open Source OpenOffice (available free from OpenOffice.org: Home) instead ... Offers word processing, spreadsheet, presentations and databases. There's a Windows compatibility mode, just as much functionality for the conventional user, and a lot more stability. It can even recover corrupted MS Word files on occasions ... jlancasterd Posted February 19, 2008 Share #48 Â Posted February 19, 2008 using excel or word is painful whether native Mac versions or using windows versions through parallels. Â Word for MAC is far too expensive and using the Windows version through parallels is just a cludge. Â Far better to use Word-compatible software written for the MAC such as Nisus Writer Pro, which is cheap and VERY effective - and (thank god) doesn't have an idiot 'paper-clip' trying to second-guess you all the time.... topoxforddoc Posted February 19, 2008 Share #50 Â Posted February 19, 2008 Yup, Â MS has finally got Mac friendly - Mac Office 2008 GBP85 plus VAT. I bought mine the day after it came out. Runs fine on my Mac Pro 2.66 Quad, as does LR1.3. When my G4DP Mac dies, then it will be another Mac Pro; sadly we now have 5 macs at home - oh dear!! charlesphoto99 Posted February 19, 2008 Share #51 Â Posted February 19, 2008 Considering what design heads most everyone on the is forum seems to be (and price be damned!) I'm actually a bit surprised that everyone isn't already using Macs. I would also think the new super compact Airbook would be snapped up by well to do M8 users considering all the grumbling about the enormous size of the M8 charger and willingness to pay exorbitant sums for a smaller one. Â Yes, both a Mac and a PC compute in much the same way both a Canon and a Leica take pictures. And the Macs do have more than their fair share of hardware problems. But as a poster above said it's about the "experience." Isn't that a large part of the reason we shoot persnickety German cameras?
mhoutman Posted February 19, 2008 Share #52 Â Posted February 19, 2008 here speaks a very happy apple user since 1986. Â leopard is stabile yet i have to wait for a final release of now up-to-date/contact. calendar/contact manager) Â last but not least i use windows xp under parallels and vista under vmware fusion. stunsworth Posted February 19, 2008 Share #55  Posted February 19, 2008 It's getting on for 40 years since I was last able to claim student rates for anything  Which is why it's called _home_ and student edition. If you have a home you're eligible.  I tried the Open Office package. Worked ok perhaps 95% of the time.

The last timer I checked on the Microsoft UK site they were making it quite clear that you needed to provide proof of being a bona fide student before you could get the student version. From your previous replies I see that you are a talker rather than a poster of photographs on this forum; perhaps I misunderstood the heading at the top of the forum? Thanks ever so much for correcting me. Â Honestly I feel that you were being the rude one. The title of this specific thread says it's about a review of a Mac. You could have just passed over this thread but no you had try to play forum police (hmmm, like checking out my previous posts???!!!!). Let us have our fun - eventually the thread will die and then you can breathe easy again. Â Yes, I prefer to talk. Though unlike some of the biggest (and rudest) talkers on this forum, I use my real name and post my website (like yourself) which includes lots of Leica work.
