Just a quick and dirty first impression,

1.Wow! it's so much faster, very quick to import, export and general adjustments are very quick on my MBP. It might be worth the upgrade price alone to drag a little more speed from my G5 PPC at home.

2. Plenty of new adjustments can be made such as black point, recovery, definition, vibrancy. there is a new heal tool. But of most interest to me owning a M8 is the Moire adjustment which removes the "rainbow" around an area of moire, Nice!.

3. It seems to have the function to recall different decoding profiles v1, v1.1, v2(DNG) & v2 which might be an avenue to using custom profiles (possible hack in the making) But I'm not overly impressed with the new v2 decode or colours. Perhaps with more time I will find subtle ways to bring back the richness in the reds and dampen down the purples as in 1.5.6.

But in saying that skintones are a little more natural and noise is better in v2.

Some complications switching back and forth between 1.5.6 and v2. They seem to be using the same user setting in the plist and library paths seem to get updated with which ever library you had open last. The easiest method to switch between apps is to go to the directory where your library resides and open the library concerned by right clicking and open with Aperture 156 or Aperture if you followed my recommendation to rename your existing Aperture application to Aperture 156. Remember don't convert your existing 1.5.6 library into a v2 library as there is no going back.

Here are a few quick examples of the moire and what the adjustment can do.

First 2 are Aperture 1.5.6

Second 2 are Aperture 2

No Adjustments except for sharpening, moire tool, crop and export sRGB 960x960 Jpg.

Here is what I'm talking about in reds and purple.

First is Aperture 1.5.6 and second is Aperture 2

White balanced to 6200k with a little contrast and sharpness to both

Aperture has been nesting on my computer since it came out. I didn't love it's raw conversions initially, but I have been very tempted to use it as my all purpose organizer of all my images. If it turns out that raw conversions are improved, (I like Raw Developer and Silky Pix a lot, but neither has any use as an all purpose photo station) I'll definitely go to it for conversion and organizer, and if not, I plan to just use it's organizational features. best...Peter

Hi Eoin,

Is it me or is there a lot more detail in the purples in version 2.0?

I do like the skintones better in the 2nd picture.

I have installed v2 on my MBP and will do some testing tomorrow. At first glance i think i like the user interface better and it seems a lot faster than 1.5.6.

Okay downloaded trial and tried it for a few minutes. Think I'll stick to LR for organizing and quick output and CIV4 for fine printing output. I can see why people like Aperture, but ability to only create websites on a .mac account is a non-starter for me. Plus the Vault thing - my storage capacity is already maxed (no matter how many hard drives I buy) and that's just too much.

It's good to have so many choices though and not anyone is "right." It's also a matter of just how much time one has to learn yet more software.

Hi Hans,

I'd have to say the reds and purples are more true in the original Aperture, but the purple is too strong and has a violet tone. For sure the skin tones are much better in v2 but like I said this is only a quick and dirty test. There are lots of new adjustments to effect the image in new ways for Aperture and I'm looking forward to trying them out.

For the improved speed Moire adjustment alone it's well worth the upgrade, everything else is just a bonus IMO and I'll paying the €99 for the upgrade for sure. It'll take a little time to find out what effects what exactly but my heart has always been with the complete workflow and image management Aperture gives me and I very rarely need to step outside for any adjustment. CS3 was always there to be used inside Aperture and still is for those special need moments.

BTW further sharpening has been added to print output with preview, again a nice feature.

Well worth a download of the trial for 30 days, the tutorials are well put together and should give non Aperture users an insight into our Aperture workflow past, present and now future.

Nice one Apple, ;)

Charles, you can create a website to any location with aperture. It's the gallery function that is only .mac. Apart from that there are plenty of third party plugins for aperture that you can export to various gallery applications or flash pages or online galleries.

......the Vault thing - my storage capacity is already maxed (no matter how many hard drives I buy) and that's just too much.

You can choose to leave the files in the original location.

Was that in Version 1??

Have to say, I still find it incredibly slow. :(

I am on a 2.0 Core Duo Macbook Pro with 2gig of ram.

have been using LR since the beta version and with all my cameras and so far preffered it to aperture....although there were always some features in appleture that i really wanted in LR (lightbox, loupe).....well appleture 2.0 is a big step forward....the conversions are great, tethered support work GREAT WITH THE M8! also much faster then the leica capture osftware....i think i might just switch....

it really bugs me that appleture cannot read the xmp data (or cannot do anythng with it) so i would have to go back through all shoots and re-do adjustments...which won't happen.....

when the files are converted to .dng files (through the adobe dng converter) the settings ARE applied, so that might be an option....

all in all a real improvement, i think the price came down as well (199)....we will see what adobe can do with LR....tethered support is the least they have to show....

<snip> but ability to only create websites on a .mac account is a non-starter for me.<snip>

I am sure you can create websites which you upload via ftp anywhere. You certainly used to be able to in 1.5.6, so I'd be amazed if they'd pulled that function.

I haven't yet had a chance to download the upgrade but reviewing the tutorial, it appears that some of the tools I use in ACR have been melded into Aperture_ a welcome change from Aperture 1.xx_in particular the highlight recovery, black point sliders & real time clipping display using the command key .

I was doubtful about Aperture until trying V.2.

I like much the new recovery, enhance and vibrancy tools.

The loupe works much better : no hiccups anymore.

And it's rather sleeker and faster with my PPC 2x2,5 Ghz.

CORRECTION

Recovery tool is very progressive and powerful : is it me,

or I feel it's better than in CS3.

But working with Retouch is very slow, putting strain on my processor,

fans out, etc., when it should not.

:o

Plus strange display bugs when using "Highlight hot and cold areas" :

the picture disappears entirely leaving instead a blue or white rectangle…

Still, I understand now why (on another thread) Eoin and others

praise the quality of image and accuracy of image display

in Aperture.

Regarding download : you should first ask for a serial number

then click on the download blue link in mail. If not, Apple website

will download 1.5.6 instead…

I am a happy Aperture user for Images with both my Leica M8 and Canon 1D Mark IIn. I Aperture on a 1.67 GHz Powerbook G4 (Power PC chip) with 2 GB of RAM with speed and performance that I find acceptable. Both tools are full of features and have significant learning curves. They are also products of first rate software development organizations which can be expected to upgrade them to match the competition. If you have already bought into the Apple OS, I would not pay to much attention to what the Aperture or Lightroom look like today, both will change faster than you can learn to exploit all the features.

Probably the key to either of the integrated packages(Aperture or Lightroom) is to come up with a backup strategy that matches your shooting style and equipment. I personally back up my Aperture files "Project" by "Project," an approach that preserves the unedited raw image, my edits and metadata without backing up everything that is in the Aperture Lirary. That approach is not very well explained in the Aperture documentation or third party handbooks.
