A Leica Day

All,

Like many around here, I am both tired of, and saddened by, the arguments that seem to accompany any significant announcement or product launch by Leica.

Instead of flying apart, I would like to suggest that we actually pull together to a common aim.

I don’t care whether you are a hardened pro or a gentleman amateur, using an M8 or a Model I. We all have one thing in common, and that is our ability to press a shutter release.

I therefore propose that we put our pixels and our emulsion where our mouths are. On one day – I propose the 29th of this month – we all take one photo of where we are, what we are doing, what we are witnessing, what we are experiencing and post that one photo on the Photo Forum, in a location set up for the purpose.

The overall result – “One Leica Day” will be a reflection of the world as seen by Forum members during that day. Our geographical spread alone should ensure interesting results; the vision and talent of you, the Forum members will guarantee something memorable.

There is no qualification required other than your ability to press the shutter release once during that 24-hour period, and share the result with the world. There is no competition, no judges, no prize, just the knowledge that you have taken part in something special.

This is not an original idea – credit goes to Ann Barton who suggested something essentially similar at the turn of the year – but I think it is a good way for all of us to demonstrate that we know how to do something other than take pot-shots at each other across the internet.

Finally, I would like to make the following personal commitment. I will give £1 for each image posted, up to a maximum of £50, to the Disabled Photographer’s Society (Welcome to the Disabled Photographers society). If anyone would like to match me, to help those less fortunate than ourselves, you would be welcome to do so.

Regards,

Bill

Great idea, Bill, I'll definitely try to find something interesting on that day!

Came on, you’re not serious guys! It can’t be!

Why not Canon Day, Sony Day, Apple Day or even George W. Bush Day, Angela Merkel Day, Karl Marx Day…

This is the most stupid idea I’ve ever seen here.

.

If bringing people together in a common cause and helping a charity is a stupid idea, I am happy to be thought of as stupid by one person.

In the meantime, we have more than 40 participants so far...

Regards,

Bill

Your comment is one of the most uncharitable, mean spirited, negative, STUPID one's I've seen! You seem to find quite a lot that you consider stupid here - If I was you I would go somewhere that bothered me less.

Bringing people together is already the meaning (and intention) of this forum. The good thing is diversity: we don't need to have all here the same opinions, ideas or feelings.

And "charity" is a word I really don't like. I help people as much as I can, but I don't practice charity (it's vexing for the people who receive it and makes us to feel better or a better conscience)

.

You are of course entitled to your opinion. Fortunately, you appear to be in a minority.

Regards,

Bill

Wow, and I mean WOW!

Congratulations, you have managed to do it - I did not think it was going to be possible in this thread, but you did it. Don't think that it has anything to do with genius though, quite the contrary...

You have actually brought a small minded egotistical bitterness to a thread that at it's heart has the intent of having it's community do something as a group that actually involves taking photographs.

Bill, being a selfish, self absorbed, temperamental, bossy photographer myself, I was very happy to see this thread and this idea put forth. Like a lot of commercial photographers with ego issues, it's rare for me to participate in something like this. It would be fun to shoot for this project and see what all our very different worlds look like - an opportunity to show and share all our rich diversities.

Sorry it had to be polluted by idiotic comments.

Look forward to seeing the results.

I am delighted - and humbled - to say that in under 24 hours we have already passed the magic 50 mark in terms of those who have declared their participation in this project.

I will be more than happy to donate my promised £50 to the Disabled Photographer's Society as a result. Please, keep signing up, and please, if you wish, make your own donations, although that is not a prerequisite to take part.

Again, to reiterate, kit doesn't matter (as long as it's Leica) location doesn't matter, subject matter is entirely up to you.

Your participation is a great advertisement for what this Forum can do when we all pull together.

Thank you,

Bill

That's OK then Bill - Manuel can contribute as the 51st photographer and not sully the world with charity (must be one of those twits who reads Ayn Rand without fully understanding her).

(I'll be in - regardless of number)
