Kiwimac Posted December 5 Share #21 Posted December 5 Advertisement (gone after registration) I’m thinking of getting the glossy black one. I need to investigate that version of the 50 Lux now. Thank heaven it’s the weekend! I’ve got time for some serious research! 🤣😜
Advertisement Posted December 5 Posted December 5 Hi Kiwimac, Take a look here New Safari Leica Lenses and a BP 50mm Lux are out . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
KFo Posted December 5 Share #22 Posted December 5 Love those Safari finish lenses! They go with my Safari M10P. I wonder if it is the same finishing as the ones I have from around 2020? The Safari paint seems to be over black (plated?) at least on the hood of my 11704 28 Cron which is showing some wear.
KFo Posted December 5 Share #23 Posted December 5 New closer MFDs too! Should make the M11 EVF crowd happy.
WvE Posted December 5 Share #24 Posted December 5 Love the looks of the GB, but too heavy for me unfortunately, 417 grams.

Too short and fat. I might get the glossy black paint Lux. Since the Safari and the lens are both brass, they could wear nicely together. I’m just in the middle of acquiring a silver 35 Lux FLE. The dealer messaged me and asked if I wanted to change my mind. However I can’t see much value in buying the Safari 35 for 39% more. It’s not 39% better. A Safari 35 Apo on the other hand….! Are these limited availability colours or production? Are they 39% more just for the green paint? That is pretty atrocious, even for Leica...

On the Leica UK website there is a small upcharge (£100 or so) from the black anodised finish to the safari. The silver finish is the most expensive of the three https://leica-camera.com/en-GB/photography/lenses/m/summilux-m-35mm-f1-4-asph-safari-edition/shop-now
Kiwimac Posted December 5 Share #30 Posted December 5 I just wrote out a lengthy response, pressed the submit button and it’s simply ‘gone’! Let’s try again. the 39% figure represents the difference between what I’m paying for an open box copy (Leica’s NZ distributor had it in a display case at their office) of the square hood 35 Lux FLE with full warranty etc. and the cost of the Safari version. There aren’t sufficient differences between the two lenses to warrant paying 39% more.

I have the square hood version, and certainly wouldn't pay 39% more for the newer version, even if I liked the green paint (and I do!)
Stuart Richardson Posted December 5 Share #33 Posted December 5 4 minutes ago, Kiwimac said: Apparently not. The glossy black is 500 units only according to post above. It sounds like the difference is between a limited run and a limited edition. Most Leica gear is made in production runs of a certain number of items. In this case, 500. But if they sell out quickly, it seems like Leica would just make another production run. In a limited edition, however, the items would be numbered with the number they are in the series. It does not appear that they have done that here. So while there is no guarantee Leica will make another production run, it does not seem like they have ruled out producing more to keep up with demand. It seems like Leica has been pushing more and more of these aesthetic options as a way to sell more lenses without developing new formulas or new bodies, so I think we can expect them to continue to offer them for at least a while. 1

Quoting from here , https://www.macfilos.com/2025/12/04/leica-announces-four-limited-edition-m-lens-variants-three-safari-and-one-glossy-black/ , the Safari lenses are of limited numbers. "The lenses represent the first special edition of the new “close-focus” lenses. Production will be limited to between 500 and 900 units per lens. According to Leica, they “match the respective series models and, as compact wide-angle, reportage and standard focal lengths, offer maximum freedom and flexibility in image composition”. Not clear if the gloss black numbers are similarly bound.

Although not always numbered. The 11811 was always described as being limited to only 700 and as far as I can ascertain, 700 is all they made. This ‘might’ be related to the fact that the LFI numbered and limited edition came immediately before 11811 and the bodies are identical aside from finish and the LFI ones are numbered. So the body parts might have been machined in case they needed spares for the LFI run. Don’t know though. Just guessing!🤣 Edited December 5 by Kiwimac Stupid Autocorrect! Exactly so! The one I’m getting is silver, which will look nice on the Safari. It’s actually the first silver lens I’ve bought in 27 years using M cameras. PS does anyone know why the first letter of a sentence after pressing return to create a new paragraph never gets automatically capitalised (at least that’s what happens on my iPhone)? This is the only place on the net I’ve ever seen that behaviour.

WvE Posted December 5 Share #40 Posted December 5 Beautiful lens! I was once persuaded by the Summilux BC, which was supposed to be a limited edition, until they produced more because of demand. Time will tell for this GB version. P.S. I sold the BC, far too heavy on my M.
