Exposure Preview > Shutter Button half-pressed

My common issue with EVFs is their limited dynamic range and contrast. That is especially irritating in combination with exposure simulation (WYSIWYG). To optimally expose an image (avoid clipping, maximize exposure), the image in the EVF is too often either too dark or too bright for proper framing.

That's so bothersome with the Hasselblad X series that I have to shoot with exposure simulation off (manual mode only).

Turning the exposure simulation off disables or invalidates histogram and highlight clipping information. Therefore, I need to be able to switch between exposure simulation on and off quickly: on to set the exposure, off to frame the image.

I have a button assigned to turn exposure simulation on/off (Olympus) or to cycle through modes (Fuji). Leica SL3 and Q3 also allow quick toggling of exposure simulation, but only in M mode.

Interestingly, the Leica M series, primarily a rangefinder/OVF camera, handles the described EVF issue better than any other EVF camera. By setting Exposure Preview to Shutter Button half-pressed, I can frame the scene without exposure preview (almost like an OVF) and then set or verify the exposure with a half-press.

I would love to see Leica implement it in its other cameras.

Exposure preview can cause flickering together with magnification on my MEV1 so i set it off personally. I did the same on the M11 already as i prefer uncluttered view anyway so i don't care TBH but Leica should fix this flickering issue if it is shared by others IMO.

Exposure preview used with spot metering is a very efficient way to capture what you want the way you want it.

Why would you need exposure preview with spot metering? I assume you adjust exposure using ev scale, not histogram or blinkies when using spot metering.

I could see using it as a WYSIWYG-centric alternative to the undeniably specific metric provided by the histogram. My first thought was that I might find it useful in a monochromatic situation. It's just another way of looking at things...

The M-EV discussions of late re-sparked my curiosity, and I've been playing with the Visoflex 2 in a wider variety of situations than perhaps I did in the past, when I saw the V2 as simply an update to Leica's long history of auxiliary finders.

So lately I've sometimes had the V2 mounted on top of my M11 or M11M. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool rangefinder and optical finder guy, but it's nice to have the option of more than one way to view.

And, as I've mentioned before, it's a lot easier to put an auxiliary electronic finder into the accessory shoe than it would be to put a coupled rangefinder into the accessory shoe ...
