Whatever I do, following all instructions on their site, the @#$#@ program will only start once, when I check the box launch program after installing. After that - never again... I think I'll go for Bibble, or stay with C1LE...

Jaap--wow. That's a strange one. You on Windows or Mac?

Here on Windows, I've had the thing crash on me once or twice (annoying but expected in major release like this) and all work was saved, so it was minor.

But are you saying you start it and it never starts again?

I did notice, too, that it takes a very *long* time to start up, but eventually it does actually open up...

Jamie, I just clocked it on my XP and Mac ... on a XP with 2 gig RAM, it chews up 165MB RAM and came up in about 15 seconds, on a Mac Pro with 8 gig RAM it came up in less than 5 sec ... this was achieved when I was editing some video footage with FCP on the Mac. concurrently.

e strano... werkt als een zonnetje bij mij. But I do not see the great progress above 3.7.7.1 except the more glamorous design, so that may give you a bit of consolation.

I too was about to give up on C1 V4 until I watched their video (downloadable free from the Phase One website in QuickTime or WMV formats). Now the way v4 is implemented starts to make sense and I think with a bit more practice I will convert over from 3.7.7 LE. I think we have been spoilt with 3.7.7 being so easy and quick for batch processing but the flexibility and abilities of V4 I think, will compensate. I suspect once you get used to it, it will become as second nature as 3.7.7 is. I have converted lots of people, who thought RAW files were the work of the devil, to using them, when they saw how easy it was with 3.7.7.

I also had some problems with the Beta 1 version, Beta 2 was better and the launched v4 took some getting used to, especially the way it selected files and batch processed but now I have sussed it, I would never want to go back to LE3.7.

It is essential that the program is properly registered however. I initially found that not all my personal data was recorded on the Phase One site, only a few items were missing but it was enough for the program to bomb out on me until I fixed it.

The biggest gripe I have against C1 is the fact that it produces sub-folders containing many megabytes of 'crap' in every folder containing DNG files that is accessed, and that these work sub-folders are not automatically tidied up. Is this still the case?

I am afraid so Steve, it plonks them everywhere, on your desktop and of course on your memory card if you wish to review images without copying them to the computer.

It is a real pain, there have been many complaints about this behaviour and they may revise it. But I like the results.

For Jaap

On my machine (Windows) C1 v4 (the part called imagecore processor.exe?) initially tried to access the 'trusted zone'. When this was prevented by my firewall the software just stopped. I changed the firewall setting and it now runs normally. It also tries to access the internet but opens normally even if the firewall prevents access.

I agree totally with you, Steve.

Installed C1 4 last night, still have to empty various and numerous subfolders hidden God knows where

On another hand, I think that PhaseOne provides the best algorythms.

imho (my eyes), C1 Pro is better, than C1 4 or C1 Le. With C1 4, I like the unique and matchless precision of the new Kelvin scale, Seems to me to be the primary basics of any process with raw files. Push up the saturation, find the right temperature, put back saturation to zero, that's it ! A cup of tea, then it's time express my taste with other features ;)

I'm always happy by any of C1 lprogs, as soon as I switch off and from CameraRaw.

I used SilverFast with my Digilux2, did like it, but don't know anymore about it. Any feedback here or there ? Not cheap, indeed..

Anyway, I never give up, only a question of learning while practising, I'll go through and force myself to domesticate the wild animal. Wintertime is the perfect period to stay at home and turn evenings useful :D

It is basically very strange what it is doing. I install it, and it starts up from install without problems. I close it down and after that there is no reaction to the shortcut. When I go to the folder and try to start it directly the .exe it will show the activation screen, and nothing after that... Closing Panda Antivirus makes no difference. On the Phase One website they suggest updating .net, uninstalling, deleting a number of files and reinstalling. No difference...:(

Well my issue with it on my G5 powerpc is that I can't get it to quit. I get the whirling ball and then have to force quit. Any idea what's going on with this?

I have to say I never used 3.77 but am now trying 4.0. For things like editing and making quick websites etc Lightroom is much better. But for any high end printing C1 works best. But I'll only use it for select images/projects.

I had this problem with the beta version not starting up again after quitting. It turns out that if the folder it was pointing to before quit and restart is missing such as when it was on a removable disk then you will get the spinning ball (Mac G5). I think also if you use lightroom concurrently on the same folder then you can get something like this too. Try reinstalling and making sure you leave it pointed on a file folder or directory that isn't going to be deleted or moved and it will restart and work fine.

C1v4 runs quick and with no real issues on my MacBook Pro with Leopard (machine got a Leo upgrade rather than a fresh install). But then I find it to be lagging behind Adobe Lightroom. I put C1 to little use now, honestly. Kind of sad, since I bought C1 in the beginning of 2005 and was impressed by its speed and intelligent user interface along with good RAW conversion. Seems like P1 was more concentrating on their hardware recently.

i also have given up on C1.

I find the website completely terrible and now I managed to download it just quits after processing a file.

Sent them a mail a week ago and apart from a message 'acknowledging my mail' I have heard nothing...it is a pity but seems to be a less than proffessional outfit in my opinion.

Thanks everybody for the tips, but I am not going to spend more effort on this. Life is too short to waste time on a buggy program.

I am beginning to feel at home with ACR, I particularly like the "smart object" interface with CS3, there is always C1LE and I was quite impressed with a trial of Bibble.

Hi Jaap,

Work with C1-4 is work with many subtle advantages, among them with specific ICC profiles.

You can also take advantage of the smart objects selecting in C1-4 "Process Recipe" the output format "DNG", after treated the raw image, and opening the file with PS-CS3 from where it has been located by the previous process. This new DNG file can be opened by Camera Raw 4.3.1, treated and then opened as smart object.

Francisco.
