Leica most likely would need to find its own niche within medium format.  It won't be able to directly compete with Hasselblad and Fuji.  The Hasselblad X2dii is already lighter and cheaper than the SL3 right now.  Both Hasselblad and Fuji also work at a faster pace than Leica, they are 100% committed to their product lines (Leica the past decade has only shown commitment to M and Q) and both are quite frankly more innovative than current day Leica.

That niche would have to be a substantial development of the S series I suppose. Up until now it is more of an upgrade into the professional market to compensate for the loss of the R series but with only limited penetration into the market. Not that Leica expected it to be more  at the time.

The SL already has serious competition. Looking at all the offers of discounts on cameras from makers at the moment it should be obvious that the costlier cameras are not selling as well as might be hoped. The SL is no doubt being squeezed because you can but very good alternatives at lower cost. Leica's part of the market has been niche for a long time and in order to survive they probably need to continue to fill niches rather than compete directly.

It would also kill many of the Q sales, as well as M sales, including the just released EV1. Leica know their base are well heeled customers that feel the need to own one of each. If those were distilled into a single line, that wouldn't behoove them, as each line (except the Q of course) also need their own cadre of lenses and accessories.

It would be part of the SL line, so the overall sales of the line would go up.

A big part of the Q's appeal is that it's an integrated solution. That might not be a selling point for camera geeks like us, but most people don't want to sort through tedious threads comparing Summicrons to Vario-Elmarits.
