maxinmanhattan Posted August 6 Share #1 Posted August 6 Advertisement (gone after registration) hi, I hope someone could help me understand what is "optic cell" of a lens? I just had a summicron-m lens of mine serviced in Leica NJ, and one of the service item is "replaced optic cell". What is it? the case holding all the elements inside the outer shell? Thanks! Advertisement Posted August 6 Posted August 6 Hi maxinmanhattan, Take a look here could someone explain what is "optic cell" of a lens?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
farnz Posted August 6 Share #2 Posted August 6 Normally (to my understanding) the 'optical cell' is all the glass elements in a lens treated as a single entity. Most lenses these days have glass elements that are cemented together and others that are not to improve the lens's performance and the total of these glass elements make up the optical cell. Pete. Pete. oh, if so, they replaced the inside glass elements of the lens then. the lens had a little haze inside. now it is gone. great! Thanks! lct Posted August 6 Share #4 Posted August 6 On some lenses, like Summicron 50/2 v3 (11817), the optical cell is removable by the user. I don't have this lens anymore but here is how an optical cell looks like on a Tele-Elmar 135/4 v1 (11851). Welcome, dear visitor! Jean-Michel Posted August 6 Share #5 Posted August 6 Just call Leica NJ and ask. I doubt that they replaced the optical cell as that would replacing all the glass elements.

Agreed - I suspect 'Replaced' = 'Put back in' as they will have disassembled the lens to service it.

In which case someone is telling Porkies......😸...... Yes; as Pedaes has just posted a few seconds ago they will have removed the optical cell for cleaning purposes and reassembled the lens - which, physically, includes replacing the optical cell in the lens' body (with a great deal of precision!) jgeenen Posted August 6 Share #8 Posted August 6 It is comparingly easy to find out - if the cost of the service is in the range of 500 US$, they have just disassembled and reassembled the optical unit (and probably just replaced the lens mounting rings which are called "optical cell assemblies"), if the cost is 1000 US$ and more, they might indeed have replaced the optical unit with lenses and fitting. But if in doubt you might give Leica NJ a call. BTW, work descriptions are not always perfect. I just have my Summilux 50mm at Leica for service. The description says in short: "disassemble - repair - calibrate - clean - test shots - second clean - final inspection" - it seems there is no need to assemble the lens at any given point in time ....

Lets hope that they're not following Ikea's procedure by return a box of parts and an instruction sheet on how to put your Summilux together. "replaced" here means, took off and then re-placed it. the aperture ring does feel much more clicky now. thanks everyone. Welcome, dear visitor! farnz Posted August 6 Share #11 Posted August 6 Since they've mentioned the 36.2 x 38 x 0.06 mm adjusting washer it sounds like they've shimmed your lens too so hopefully focus will be spot on. Pete.

Pete. yes, happy to report that focusing is spot on for close up, mid-range and infinity. especially like the recalibrated aperture ring. bought it 20 years ago (around $1000 new I remember), one of my favorite. thanks everyone for your insights!
