Shit happens ....

here the correction from the magazine: They make a mistake in translation. As I always say German is not so easy and Wetzlar - German (Hessisch) is even more difficult.

Here the text:

Dear reader,

This is about a deviation we have found in our Interview to Peter Karbe concerning the question about a future 135mm APO lens. We have corrected this mistake and than that part of the interview reads as follows:

Karbe: That would be nice (laughs)

[“That would be nice” in German is: “das ware schön”, but Peter sounds, with accent from Wetzlar, something like: “das schon wir”, and that translates something like “that we already”, so we misunderstand that and in that instant of time we think Leica prepares a 135mm SL lens. In short: We can not confirm there will be a 135mm lens in the short future]

The link for the corrected version of TCFW is the following one:

Please delete the old file. We sincerely apologize for this transcription mistake.

Sincerely,
Luis Argüelles-Méndez

Other gospel statements from Leica that may have been misheard and mistranslated:

  • We can easily make a hybrid OVF/EVF viewfinder for the Leica M.
  • M = Messsucher-Ersatz
  • Das Unwesentliche

After reading this I found myself consulting Wikki .

Not about  language differences but the spelling of Fred Karno.

Has anyone tried the 135mm 1.4 yet? The MTF look insane, considering they are done at 1.4. Obviously it is a beast of a lens, but it looks like it also has incredible performance. I would love to try one, though I don't think I really have much use for it, haha. I still have my 120mm APO Macro Summarit S, which is seemingly in a similar wheelhouse, albeit with slightly larger DOF.

Just by comparison, here is the infinity mtf for the 120mm APO Macro Summarit S, which when it was made was probably one of the finest lenses ever made. This chart is 5, 10, 20, 40 and goes out to 27mm, so the 10, 30lpmm of the Sigma is not a 1 to 1, but given the S has the 20 and the 40, you can kind of place the 30lpmm in between. It is pretty clear that the Sigma is sharper even if you stop reading the S lens at the 35mm frame size. Don't get me wrong, I am not sure you would see a big difference in sharpness, but it goes to show just how good the Sigma lens probably is.
