Hey all, I'll preface this by saying I have tried to search and research before asking this question so forgive me/point me to threads if it's been covered.

I recently couldn't help but jump on a deal (I am now reaping the understanding of why it was a deal.. $1600, returning is an option) for a heavily used 28mm Elmarit ASPH v2 (11677). The listing was clear that it was cosmetically worn, which I don't mind, but fully functional. Judging by the cosmetic condition it seems the lens was struck or dropped. Upon testing with my M8 (only other Leica's are film), I am guessing it's not functional and is front focusing (or all my other lenses are none functioning... jk) Example photos with different lenses attached below but my question is this:

Do I try to repair with Leica (YYE won't touch it), or save myself headache/time and just purchase a new copy? I've read the newer copies are harder to work on.

If there are DIY fixes I would give it a go since I want to start using the lens.

Below are photos taken of a random fence line with some contrast behind. First is the faulty 28mm (blurry fence line, post in focus), 40mm Summicron-c (fence line in focus), 50mm ASPH (fence line in focus), and a 90mm Elmar (fence line in focus). All shots taken wide open except the 50mm, which was taken at 2.8.

Any opinions or thoughts welcome. Thanks all.

Get  an estimate from a reliable third party repair shop and make an economic decision. That one “won’t touch it” is a too thin a reason to write it off.

I would say $1600 for a V2 Elmarit-M ASPH in that condition is not a deal.  Add a repair and you could have bought a decent one that will be much easier to sell on if you don't want to keep it

+1. Not that good an idea to buy a lens that was struck or dropped anyway. I would return it personally.
