Filmore Posted July 18 Share #1 Posted July 18 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey all, I'll preface this by saying I have tried to search and research before asking this question so forgive me/point me to threads if it's been covered. I recently couldn't help but jump on a deal (I am now reaping the understanding of why it was a deal.. $1600, returning is an option) for a heavily used 28mm Elmarit ASPH v2 (11677). The listing was clear that it was cosmetically worn, which I don't mind, but fully functional. Judging by the cosmetic condition it seems the lens was struck or dropped. Upon testing with my M8 (only other Leica's are film), I am guessing it's not functional and is front focusing (or all my other lenses are none functioning... jk) Example photos with different lenses attached below but my question is this: Do I try to repair with Leica (YYE won't touch it), or save myself headache/time and just purchase a new copy? I've read the newer copies are harder to work on. If there are DIY fixes I would give it a go since I want to start using the lens. Below are photos taken of a random fence line with some contrast behind. First is the faulty 28mm (blurry fence line, post in focus), 40mm Summicron-c (fence line in focus), 50mm ASPH (fence line in focus), and a 90mm Elmar (fence line in focus). All shots taken wide open except the 50mm, which was taken at 2.8. Any opinions or thoughts welcome. Thanks all. Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted July 18 Share #5 Posted July 18 Get an estimate from a reliable third party repair shop and make an economic decision. That one “won’t touch it” is a too thin a reason to write it off.
Tessar. Posted July 18 Share #6 Posted July 18 I would say $1600 for a V2 Elmarit-M ASPH in that condition is not a deal. Add a repair and you could have bought a decent one that will be much easier to sell on if you don't want to keep it
costa43 Posted July 18 Share #7 Posted July 18 Advertisement (gone after registration) If it was me, I would get another one. I would want to feel good about this sort of purchase. Once the CLA cost has been factored in, you are not saving much on a minty used copy.

I would return it personally.
Filmore Posted July 19 Author Share #9 Posted July 19 Thank you all for the replies. I'll be starting the return process today and looking for a newer copy. Appreciate it.
