you subsequently got a lux 50/1.4 pre-asph v3 that you totally love, especially wide open?

I'm conflicted because my 50 rigid is an excellent copy and I'm thrilled with pics from it, but it seems that the 50 pre-asph can do everything the 50 rigid does, and more.

And if you would keep them both, what circumstances would compel you to grab the 50 rigid off the shelf leaving the 50 pre-asph at home?

I'm having difficulty parsing this question without falling apart laughing my head off. Even at my age I have a schoolboy humour.Β

Well, only you can decide which lens to use, and if the proceeds from selling the rigid are worth it to you. I sold my 'rigid' – purchased new back in 1968 – when I let go all my film equipment and it made sense for the eventual purchaser to have that lens to go with one of the film M bodies I let go. I replaced it with the new Summicron model.Β

I own several 50s and find use-cases for each, though I don’t own the β€˜lux pre-asph (I use my β€˜lux asph a lot, and the apo as well).

What I like about the Rigid is its high resolution and low contrast comparing to modern Lenses. That’s why I use it in high contrast situations where modern high contrats lenses are just β€˜too much’.

I own both, exactly a Summicron 50/2 DR and a Summilux 50/1.4 v3. Different lenses definitely. The Summilux is softer at edges & corners below f/8, has more color fringing, more distortion but less flare. The Summilux has 0.7m MFD vs 0.5m for the DR but the MFD of the Rigid is 1m IINW. My advice FWIW: if you like the IQ of the Rigid as much as i do, keep it preciously because good copies are not always easy to find. Happy snaps :)

No snarc at all, just a deliberate misinterpretation of your phraseology for the sake of a cheap laugh.

An alternative response could have beenΒ "I can keep my cron rigid, darling, for anything IΒ totally love, especially wide open"
But humour is never successful if you have to explain it.

Sorry for disrupting your thread.

thanks that's helpful. Under what circumstances would you decide to use the rigid instead of the pre-asph? It seems to my untrained eyes that the pre-asph at f2 is pretty much on par with the rigid, maybe a smidge more contrast, but with the added bonuses of opening up to f1.4 and having a close focus distance of .7M - both of which the rigid lacks. So I guess I'm wondering when I'd ever have a reason to shoot with the rigid over the pre-asph.Β

That said, I have some kind of attachment to the rigid and may just keep it even if I don't use it.

For anything but f/1.4. Not sure my subjective PoV is relevant to you though as my Rigid is a pristine DR i consider my best 50/2 if not my best 50 ever vs competitors like 50/2 apo and 50/1.4asph, go figure πŸ™„
