Sample borderline case:

  • Sigma camera with Panasonic lens (L-Mount but no Leica product)

i would say, only images with a sensor in a Leica camera or a Leica lens, [film cameras bodies don't count]

Recently a question has come up in the Leica Forum that I can't find a good answer to:

Should only pictures taken with Leica equipment be allowed in the Leica Forum?
Or should we also allow pictures taken with L-mount products from other brands (e.g. Panasonic, Sigma, Sirui)?

I have set up a poll to get a picture of the mood: Please vote which solution you think is the best.

It will also help me to make a decision if you comment here, explain your decision or suggest an alternative.

Not sure I get the conundrum. We have a functional setup.

We have appropriate subforums for L-Mount offerings and a wider diversification based on image categories / non photographic discussions etc.

L-Mount includes the players mentioned by Andreas above, and ZM/Voigtlander etc are a good lower cost alternative for many Leica users, and the lenses perform quite well. To me, the broader ecosystem is also part of the Leicasphere. I enjoy gear as much as photography and wouldn’t want to be limited only to Leica branded products in sharing my contributions here.

If we must get philosophical, what is a real Leica? Is Taylor&Hobson permitted? Rebadged or inspired designs with a red dot? Much as I enjoy my Leica gear, I also enjoy some items from other manufacturers.

To me, the forum is an open and evolving space, and I enjoy it as such.

The way I read it:- Leica cameras, Leica lenses, L (third party) cameras using Leica lenses, non Leica lenses on Leica cameras. On the odd occasion a non Leica  (neither camera or lens) to illustrate or for serious discussion..

This is a consultation, not a voting process. I the end Andreas sets the rules.

I guess, something in between, otherewise the thread should'nt start with a vote.

This is a long thread, and honestly I read the first two pages and the last.  So, that is the basis of my comment.

First, I would say that this is the “Leica Forum.”  That said, I would think that any photograph should have a Leica connection - whatever that connection is.  In other words, a Sony camera with a Sigma lens using an E mount has no Leica connection. Yet, a sigma FP camera with an L mount Sigma lens, might be considered a Leica connection.

We find in the SL section of the Leica Forum, significant discussion about “I wish Leica would make the XXX lens” or “The Sigma L-mount XXX lens is a great lens, I don’t care if Leica makes it.”

However, we do not see significant threads of the Sony camera or other branded cameras as those seem less “Leica” like. To be clear, other camera brands are brought into the discussion, and that makes for great information.  But, the thread is not “How cool is the new Sony Alpha body?”

I think the forum dictates the images and the form has a “Leica” connection.

Not sure if I’m as clear writing as I’m thinking, but these are my thoughts.

David.

I voted for the sub forum/thread option, there will always be a few strong arguments (Minolta for instance) but no one knows what the future holds for the L mount alliance and who else Leica will go into business with or go out of business with for that matter. It could dilute and confuse things. I really enjoy seeing the images that people take with different gear and not only Leica products but keeping it as it is (Leica lens or camera body) is my vote. It’s working well and a nice place to be for us Leica fans.

Very clear and very self-critical:

It was one of my worse ideas to initiate this discussion.

I was already aware that there are good arguments for both extremes (“Leica only” vs “also everything with L-mount”).

My hope was to find a differentiated picture or some kind of compromise to get the good arguments for both sides on top of each other:

  • Clear positioning as a Leica forum
  • Openness to L-mount photographers (and photography in general)

Neither the discussion nor the vote showed a clear result, instead I have caused uncertainty and controversy (especially on the German side of the forum).

Therefore, it is my decision to close this thread and explicitly confirm the existing rules:

Zitat

Prerequisite for placing a photo is that it has been made with Leica or L-Mount equipment

Please excuse this action.

Regards
Andreas
