Not being a camera manufacturer or software developer... The aforementioned "up to a point" would be the motor or by whatever means the lenses are moved from close focus point to infinity - there is probably a small range to improve focusing speed by adjusting the voltage. What can be improved is the autofocus software, like eye, object, or animal recognition, the prediction of movement, speed, and direction, and modern cameras don't even lose "the eyes" when the person turns it back to the camera. All that most certainly can be improved.

They can shift the algorithm that switches between PDAF and CDAF. PDAF is faster, CDAF more accurate. Leica is more biased to. (micro)accuracy. There is a limit to software tweaks, though. In the end one will run into hardware limitations. There is more gain to be found in using lenses with fast AF. For instance the Sigma 70-200 approaches Canon AF speed on the SL3S. -Obviously not possible on a Q 🤔
