I went to London yesterday and popped into Harrods because you have to.  It's the law here.

As usual whenever I'm in there, I went straight to the camera department and although there's a lot of pretty things there, the thing that most caught my eye was the Leica M11+Noctilux pair in glossy black paint.

I guess beauty is in the eye, etc... but I found myself staring at them for far too long!  If only I had the money....!!

I then left Harrods, because they've stopped selling puppies and lion cubs, and in any case I had a tube to catch.

Oh to be rich!  I guess I'll stick to my M240.

I see a red dot and want it painted black 😉

This leaves unanswered the most important question...

... will a Glossy Black Leica clash with my Desert Tan limited edition safari jacket?

Hmmm.... Perhaps if I set it off with the Shaved Albino Sable Skin strap....

... maybe the one inset with the Star Sapphire?

Because, honestly, the Bulbous Rhinestone version is so vulgar...

Though I do so like the way the Bulbous Rhinestone renders specular light....

So much more organic than the Star Sapphire...

I have M11 glossy black, but not the noctilux because I have the regular noctilux 50/1.2.

And paired with Summilux 50 v1 is also good looking........

Your comment got me reflecting upon an incident in my younger days…

When I got my first “real” job many decades ago, working as a clerk at a fuel terminal, I lamented out loud that I would never be able to afford a Corvette.  A big burly 50+ year old truck driver tells me in his deep, raspy voice, “It don’t take money to buy a Corvette, just big balls to sign on the dotted line.”

All these years later and I still don’t own a Corvette.

I prefer lots of money with small balls to no money with big balls

Ok - I don't mean to sound so extreme. But anything that suggests we use this stuff as jewelry annoys me.

Alright. In the 1960s my Dad had a couple of Leicas, a IIIc and a IIIg. When I hit 14, he let me borrow and use the IIIc on numerous occasions. Though he was a university prof I was hardly a "born with a silver spoon in his mouth" type. He worked very, very hard, and saved asiduously.

What I got from him was not a sense of privilege, but instead an understanding of the meaning and value of hard work, and how, when you love what you do, work can be joyous.

He had an Omega enlarger, a small one, with a maximum film size of 35mm. I had access to that, and in my teens started doing darkroom work with the enlarger set up on my Mom's washing machine. In ask the years since, I've never stopped.

Sure, I think the gear is beautiful, but my love of Leica equipment is based solely on my use of Leica bodies for what is now 57 years. Left hand, right hand, nothing else approaches the utter ergonomic ease and sheer muscle memory of a Leica rangefinder. It truly "disappears in my hands," leaving me free to concentrate on the photograph, not the equipment.

Anyway, when someone comes up to me me when I'm absorbed in making photographs and says something like, "Oooooh, look at you, a Leica," it says more about them than me.

They really don't understand that some of us love using this equipment for reasons other than as a statement of conspicuous consumption.

Anyway, yup, these cameras are beautiful.

some of us

That’s the crux right there isn’t i?. Some of ‘us’ will have Leicas to show off wealth, some to look the part, some because of the image look, some because of the camera feel and some because of who knows what.

It’s all good surely? If you’re making a choice that makes you happy, I raise my glass to you. If that choice actually gets you taking more photos, I’ll raise two

Sorry to slide in a bit of a downer on the Black Paint love-fest, but I infinitely prefer the regular black finish of my yes much lighter too M11-M and the M11-D........It's truly hard wearing as well, for me that's another couple of "good" boxes ticked.

Black Paint finish is nice on an MP, I had one until recently but even that I sold off to get a bono black M6TTL /.58 which better suits my lens FL preferences, it's a nudge bigger but I prefer it in the hand compared to the MP and M6 body size.

I know it's endemic in the Leica-verse but I've never quite understood this blingification of what I consider is essentially a tool, it's like trying to decide on a chrome finish leather handled Estwing 16oz claw hammer or a regular 16oz steel blue rubber handle one, IOATS........

Apologies to any dented fetishes......

Have the similar opinion as you do, the black paint is fabulous.
Here is a dilemma, I love the black paint version, but I got a feel that there’s going to have a safari version based on M11-P.

M11P has a slight advantage over M11. (More storage space, better screen)

M11 black paint vs M11P safari version, any suggestion? What’s your choice?

Is it possible to have M11P black paint version?

I wouldnt say the storage space is an advantage in my usage.. mainly use sdcard and having internal solely for a backup or in case i forget to put back in.. the screen is oke but still i would put a protector around it.. i see no real advantage over the vanilla M11 though but one to each own
